What boric acid should I use?
The product is available in the form of crystalline powder and solution. Both of these forms are effective, so you can choose either one. You can also find boric alcohol, but it is not as effective. The fact is that its smell will repel cockroaches, and the active substance will ultimately not achieve its goal.

How does boric acid work?
Will boric acid really help get rid of cockroaches? Yes, because it can have an impact in several directions:
- Boric acid is effective against cockroaches
Crystals can get on the legs and body of a cockroach, causing the insect to experience severe discomfort. It will probably not die, since the concentration will be low, but the unpleasant sensations will force the pest to leave the habitable premises in search of a place more suitable for normal existence.
- The smallest particles will remain on the cockroach's paws and, upon returning to the shelter, he will want to clean his paws, as a result of which the substance will enter the digestive tract. And because of this, the insect will also not feel very good.
- If you decide not to drive away the pests, but to poison them, that is, to destroy them, then remember that the lethal dose is approximately 2 or 3 grams. And if such an amount gets into the digestive organs, it will simply corrode them from the inside, as a result of which the cockroach will simply die from exhaustion.
Why boric acid balls are effective against cockroaches
Balls with boric acid against cockroaches are a cheap, safe, but effective remedy.
Boric acid looks like a fine-crystalline white powder, tasteless and odorless. The melting point of the powder is 170 degrees Celsius. The drug changes its chemical composition at higher temperatures.
Boron is a mineral used in a number of consumer products such as toothpastes, mouthwashes, and laundry products. Boric acid is used as an antiseptic.
For a long time it was believed that boric acid was absolutely safe for people, but recent studies have proven the relative safety of this substance. Since boric acid, settling and accumulating in tissues, can cause poisoning. In Russia, its use as a food additive is prohibited. However, consumption of small amounts of the substance in human food will not cause harm to health.
Boric acid is used alone or in combination with other ingredients to control insects. Boric acid beads are most effective against cockroaches due to the bait that attracts the pests.
Boric acid acts as a contact and gastrointestinal poison. A number of studies have shown that boron balls, when ingested by cockroaches, cause suffocation and paralysis. Other studies have shown that when boric acid gets on the exoskeleton and integument of cockroaches, it dries out the insects' bodies to the point of dehydration and death.

Boric acid is not dangerous to humans, but is very toxic to cockroaches.
How to use?
How to poison cockroaches? There are several different ways:
- The first recipe for use is very simple. You just need to scatter boric acid powder in places where pests travel and accumulate, that is, near food and water. Pay special attention to such places as the spaces under the sink, toilet cistern, under baseboards, window sills, next to the trash can, and so on.
- The second recipe is also quite simple. Mix the powder with flour in equal proportions, pour the resulting mixture onto cardboards and place them next to baseboards, trash cans and other areas where pests often appear.
- Acid in solution form
This recipe was also used by our grandparents. To poison cockroaches in this way, prepare approximately 50 grams of powder and one chicken egg yolk. Mix the yolk with the powder to form a homogeneous mass. Then form some flat cakes and let them dry, leaving them on the table for an hour or two. Now scatter such baits around the house and wait. Surely the cockroaches will notice them, taste the poison and soon die.
- You can also use a liquid acid solution. Boil one egg, remove the yolk from it, mash well with a fork and mix with one or two tablespoons of the solution to make a kind of dough. Roll small balls and place them in pest feeding areas.
- Prepare one chicken egg, two tablespoons of vegetable oil and two tablespoons of boric acid powder. Boil the egg hard, remove the yolk, crush and mix with acid and oil. Form small balls from the resulting thick mass and place them where insects often appear. The yolk will attract attention, the oil, due to its smell, will force cockroaches to taste the bait, and the acid will do its job once it enters the body.
- There is one more recipe. Prepare one small potato, one egg and one or two tablespoons of boric acid. Boil the potatoes in their skins, and also hard-boil the egg. Peel the potatoes and remove the yolk, mash everything together, adding acid. Form into cakes and balls and place them where the pests feed.
- You can prepare liquid poison. To do this, pour some water into a small bowl and dissolve boric acid in it. The solution must be quite concentrated so that the cockroaches definitely die. Place a few bowls around the perimeter of the kitchen and just wait. You can add sugar or oil to the water to make it even more attractive to cockroaches.
- Mix three tablespoons of sugar and a tablespoon of powdered acid, sprinkle this mixture in places where pests follow.
Summarizing
Exterminating domestic parasites is not an easy task, especially if it happens in apartment buildings or the neighbors do not share the desire to get rid of cockroaches.
House parasites have not been able to adapt to boric acid for many years; humans have successfully used this to exterminate them.
A solution of boric acid is not as convenient to use compared to powder. After all, in a dry form, the drug does not need to be changed so often, and you do not need to monitor the contents of the drinkers. But cockroaches will become infected faster and more readily through water.
They cannot do without water, so they will be forced to drink it even if it is poisoned. But instead of bait with a poisonous agent, insects are able to feed on other even inedible objects - paper, dirt, hair.
The only things they don't eat are glass and some types of plastic. To effectively combat cockroaches, all methods must be used simultaneously.
Useful tips
Several useful tips to help make the use of boric acid as effective as possible:
- Follow these tips for maximum efficiency
Remember that if a poisoned cockroach drinks enough water, its body can cleanse itself, which means that death will not occur. To be sure to kill the pest, remove all sources of clean water after baiting. Instead, you can place water with acid dissolved in it in places where insects follow. All taps must be closed tightly. In addition, it is advisable to wipe all wet surfaces with a dry cloth at night.
- Cockroaches are very curious, so they can pay attention to bright objects. Take advantage of this and make the bait attractive and catchy so that the pest will definitely notice it and will not ignore the poison.
- If you sprinkle acid powder in handfuls, then pests will probably bypass it, as they “sense something is wrong.” So if you decide to use acid in its pure form, do it wisely and cunningly.

Precautionary measures
Boric acid is dangerous if ingested in large quantities. For children, 4 g is enough, for an adult – from 15 to 20 g.
The substance has the ability to quickly penetrate the skin and mucous membranes, so boric acid should only be used with gloves.
Do not spill acid solution on yourself. If this happens, rinse skin with plenty of water. Getting boric acid into your eyes is also dangerous.
They are also washed with running water; it is advisable to visit an ophthalmologist to prevent damage to the eyeball.
In the human body, acid accumulates in the internal organs, which is why treatment with this remedy is never long-term.
When using the drug, you need to make sure that it is not eaten by pets or small children.
Opinions
Reviews on the use of boric acid to control cockroaches:
- “I decided to poison the cockroaches with boric acid when I saw the first “guests.” I made the balls, laid them out and was surprised! A few days later I noticed the first five victims. Other cockroaches also decreased their activity. In the end, everyone died."
- “A good proven remedy, but not if there are already a lot of cockroaches. I used acid as a holistic measure and I think it helped too. It’s not for nothing that my grandmother recommended it to me.”

boric acid for cockroaches
Well, you found where to ask)))))
This is what the email gave:
Method one.
Sprinkle boric acid powder on all sources of water (sinks, toilet, bathroom, just in case, treat baseboards, ventilation holes, the place where the garbage can is and all other places that you think need to be treated).
You can safely pour it in - boric acid is harmless to both humans and animals. You can even rinse your mouth with it (in solution, of course). It is sold in a pharmacy and costs about 2-3 rubles per 10 grams. To sprinkle the entire apartment you will need from 30 to 100 grams, depending on its size and your hatred of cockroaches.
However, cockroaches will smell boric acid and will try to find water where there is no need to overcome the barrier of poison. I assure you, they will succeed. Maybe not everyone, but many.
Added 3 years ago Therefore, there is a second method.
In it, their curiosity works against cockroaches.
Take a raw egg yolk, pour boric acid powder into it (30-50 grams will be required), stir until it becomes a thick, thick paste. Make balls with a diameter of about 1 cm from this paste. Let them dry (about an hour) and scatter them throughout the apartment in visible places. Pay special attention to the kitchen, toilet and bathroom (you can limit yourself to them). Do not forget that the places should be visible not from your point of view, but from the point of view of the cockroach - the surfaces of shelves, kitchen units, cabinets and other things that are above your eyes are visible places for the cockroach. If you have flowers on your windowsills, put balloons on the windowsills as well. To avoid stepping on the balls, during the day you can remove them from the places where you walk, but at night (the most active time for cockroaches), be sure to put them back again.
A cockroach will not smell boric acid disguised as an attractive ball, but it will definitely come up to inquire what is so beautiful. If he touches it with his antennae, the cockroach is doomed. If not to death, then to hellish itching. He will not be able to convey to his relatives: “Stay away from these balls - they are fraught with death,” either because their communication has not reached such a high stage of development, or because the cockroach does not know how to associate a beautiful ball with subsequent torment. This means that more and more healthy cockroaches will approach the balls and leave mortally ill. Moreover, such a cockroach can infect a healthy person upon contact.
At first it will seem to you that the cockroaches do not care about your tricks; they calmly crawl on these balls and do not experience any inconvenience. But after 3-4 weeks you will start sweeping up a huge number of cockroach corpses every day (if, of course, there were a lot of cockroaches), and then the cockroaches will disappear.
