How to remove fleas from a pet rat - the best remedies for the pest. How to detect and remove lice and fleas from a decorative rat

How to prevent parasites from appearing in a rat?

The best treatment is prevention. Not only are parasites a nuisance for your pet, but the medications to get rid of them, no matter what the advertisements say, are toxic and dangerous - to a greater or lesser extent.

Here are the basic rules:

  1. Take care of your pet's immunity. First of all, proper and nutritious food, a clean cage and fresh, clean water in the drunkard.
  2. Ventilate the room regularly.
  3. You can only buy cell filler in a specialized store.
  4. Clean and disinfect the cage as often as possible.
  5. Wash your hands and change clothes before coming into contact with the animal.
  6. If you decide to introduce your pet to a new neighbor, observe a two-week quarantine.

Be attentive to your domesticated animal: at the first sign of parasites, immediately take it to the doctor. Unfortunately, not all clinics have experienced rodent doctors, so always be prepared and become your pet's doctor if necessary. We hope this information was useful and relevant. See you in future articles!

How a decorative rat can get fleas

Rat fleas are dangerous blood-sucking insects that quickly adapt to their environment and can remain without food for a long time.

Two types of these parasites are known in nature: southern and European. Their habitat is underground rooms, sewer chambers, that is, the habitat of wild gray rodents. The southern flea is considered the most dangerous because it transmits terrible diseases.

A rat flea is no different in appearance from a dog or cat flea. It has a brown coloration, a highly flattened body and three pairs of long legs that allow it to jump long distances.

Domestic rodents obtain it from the external environment. This is most likely due to the fact that wild rats are widespread in the area.

Insects can also jump off cats and dogs. Since the kitten rat is a food source for fleas, these parasites can live anywhere.

After eating the rat's blood, they went on a journey through the rat's house and cage. There they lay eggs for further reproduction.

Animal's favorite place

Important: The favorite habitat of rat fleas is the nesting and hibernation site of domestic animals, since in case of hunger there is always a “dining room” nearby.

A flea can enter your home in several ways:

  1. On a dog or cat after a walk outside.
  2. If the apartment is on the ground floor, then fleas often enter the room from the basement or from the basement.
  3. After mating, if one of the partners is infected with fleas.

How to recognize the presence of parasites in a rat?

This animal is susceptible to attacks by several types of ectoparasites. The vital activity of each of them causes discomfort, which negatively affects the general condition of this animal.

Ticks

Detection of subcutaneous mites in rats is not always possible even with laboratory tests in the early stages of infection, since scratches are falsely negative. Only later do signs of infection appear.

Several species of mites can parasitize pet rats and can be identified by their characteristic symptoms.

Among them:

  1. Sarcoptes scabies. Peeling and scratching of the head, ears, neck, and upper back occurs.
  2. Notoedres cati. The infection is characterized by the presence of papules, vesicles, yellowish crusts, and the growth of papillae on the ears, nose, tail and genitals.
  3. Demodex aurati. The infection can be recognized by the formation of dandruff and scabs on the skin.
  4. Ornithonis Bakoti. In this case, all the symptoms of dermatitis caused by rat mites appear. Infection is also accompanied by severe itching.

Fleas

Fleas most often occur when pets live with cats and dogs in the same apartment. They live on the animal's skin and feed on its blood. Fleas have an elongated body (from 2 to 5 mm long), brown in color and three pairs of limbs, allowing them to jump to a height of 1.2 meters.

These ectoparasites leave red discharge on the rodent's body, so the water turns pink when bathing.

Bedbugs

Bed bugs can attack rats when there is no other food source. Their bites cause severe itching, anemia and scratching. Parasites are active only at night, when they leave their shelters in search of food.

Lice

Only one species of louse, Polyplax spinulosa, can parasitize ornamental rats. They can be identified by the nits that the females attach to the animal's fur. Parasites feed on blood, which is why red, inflamed spots appear at the bite sites. The parasites themselves can only be seen under a microscope. Rat lice have an elongated red body no more than 0.5 mm long.

lice eaters

The size of these ectoparasites does not exceed 1 mm. They have an elongated body covered with bristles, red in color. They are difficult to see in the animal's fur, but infestations can be detected by the presence of brightly colored eggs that are attached to the base of the fur.

If a decorative rat is infected, the animal becomes restless, wanders around the cage and refuses regular treats. If left untreated, the animal becomes malnourished and may die.

Ways to combat parasites

The most effective way to get rid of fleas in your home is to call a professional. They will carry out a comprehensive treatment of the premises using professional products. You can hire an exterminator from the health department or a private pest control company.

To prevent re-infestation, you should also poison your neighbors, because this is not enough to get rid of rat fleas in one apartment. They can easily move around the house and enter through doors and cracks.

Preventive measures are also required in basements and attics.

An important step in pest control is to treat all pets and replace their bedding with new ones.

Emulsions

Of the emulsions against rat fleas, Deltsid has proven itself to be effective. During disinsection there should be no people or animals in the room. The treatment is carried out wearing a respirator and gloves.

To prepare a solution, 3.75 ml of the drug (less than two ampoules) are diluted in a liter of water. The solution is poured into a spray bottle and sprayed around the perimeter of the room at a level of up to one and a half meters. Particular attention is paid to cracks on the walls and gaps between baseboards.

After the procedure, windows and doors are closed. The apartment is left for one hour. After this time, the room is ventilated. Repeated treatment is carried out after ten days.

Do rats have fleas?

If rat fleas get into the house, then their first target is domestic rodents - decorative rats, hamsters, guinea pigs. The animal may die from a parasite attack. If there are no such animals, then fleas feed on the blood of cats, dogs, birds and people.

Their main habitat is bedding, pet houses, and old carpets. They do not live on the host's body, but only attack it for food.

Areas prone to flea infestations include garbage disposals, basements, garbage cans, and garbage cans. Insects cling to clothes, shoes, bags, and pet hair when walking.

Indoors, they immediately find places where they can hide and reproduce:

  • connection of window frames and door frames with brickwork;
  • space behind the baseboards;
  • cracks on the wooden floor;
  • upholstery;
  • storage space for containers.

If you have old carpet that hasn't been washed in a while, it's at risk of developing into a major flea infestation. Sometimes they hide in folded bed linen and towels. They can crawl into the pillow if they find a hole in it.

Drugs

Popular products are sprays - they can be used to remove rat fleas from an apartment, as well as special compositions for treating pet hair.

Animal medications can be purchased from pet stores, and the following sprays from shops and supermarkets are suitable for general indoor treatment: Raid, Fight, Raptor, Medilis Cyper, Karbofos.

Insecticides are effective against flea larvae. Such drugs as Fas, Piretrum, Clean House are known.

Modern GET microcapsules successfully get rid of parasites. Their main active ingredient is chlorpyrifos. This is a toxic substance that quickly kills rat fleas, but care must be taken during treatment.

It belongs to the third hazard class, so its use is permitted only with protective equipment, without the presence of people and animals in the immediate vicinity. After treatment, a thorough wet cleaning is carried out.

This drug is often counterfeited. One manufacturer chose the similar name Gett - this product is many times cheaper, but is less effective.

Drops

Since exterminating fleas from just one room is not enough to completely destroy them, treatment is carried out on the skin of animals.

The drops have low toxicity and do not harm your pet, but are effective against parasites.

They should be applied to the skin in a place where the animal cannot lick them. Any drugs available in pet stores are suitable - Pistotel, Bars, Stronghold.

For additional therapy and prevention of new infections, anti-flea shampoos are used - “Mr. Kiss”, “Frontline”, “Chistotel”.

To treat decorative rats, purchase a special spray, for example, Frontline. The product is sprayed onto a piece of gauze and then rubbed into the animal's skin.

Ridding your apartment of rat fleas

If fleas are found in your home, you need to get rid of them. This must be done immediately, since these parasites multiply very quickly: a female flea produces up to 400 eggs per month. Under favorable conditions, an adult individual emerges from the egg in 20–30 days. The flea population is rapidly increasing, and if you do not start exterminating them, the risk of infection with a number of diseases increases.

Pet treatment

Cleaning your home should begin with treating pets. To do this, you can choose any suitable remedy from the huge arsenal of veterinary pharmacies:

  • collars - can cause allergies in pets, have a pungent odor, but effectively repel (do not kill) fleas;
  • sprays - will provide protection for the pet for 1-2 weeks, the entire animal is treated, you need to make sure that the pet does not lick the product: Hartz, Frontline, Advantage, Bars, Rolf;
  • drops at the withers - before and after treatment, the cat should not be bathed for 3 days, so as not to disturb the fatty film on the skin, otherwise the drops may simply not work, they protect against re-infestation for a month or more: Hartz, Frontline, Advantan, Stronghold, "Leopard", "Inspector", Rolf 3D;
  • shampoos - the product will immediately act on fleas that are on the animal, but will not protect against new parasites, and does not guarantee that fleas will not appear again: “Clandestine”, Mr. Kiss, Frontline, “Lugovoy”, etc.

To prevent re-infection, it is necessary to treat beds, houses and places where pets like to stay for a long time. During the entire treatment period, the animal’s contact with its favorite place is limited. The bed should be thoroughly shaken out, ventilated, and, if possible, washed in hot water. You can put a mattress made of pine sawdust or bunches of wormwood under the bed - fleas cannot tolerate strong odors.

If there is a dog living in the house and it is treated for ticks in a timely manner, then there is no need for flea treatment, since all tick medications also work on fleas. To treat cats, rabbits and other pets, you can use any flea spray (only the treatment should be done in a well-ventilated area and you need to monitor the pet so that it does not lick the poison). If there are small children in the house, then after treatment it is advisable to limit the baby’s contact with the cat for 1–2 days.

The drops will provide your pet with flea protection for a month.
I am the proud owner of a dog and a cat and prefer drops to the withers. It is not necessary to buy super expensive products like Frontline or Advantix and Advokat, although their quality is certainly excellent. “Bars”, “Inspector” and Rolf can handle fleas quite well. The main thing here is to choose the right dosage and act according to the manufacturer’s instructions. After treatment, I try not to pat my menagerie on the back and keep them with me for a while so that they don’t lick themselves. I do not bathe before or after the procedure of applying drops. The last remedy pleasantly surprised and pleased me. “Inspector” (drops developed in Russia) acts on fleas for 2 months, on ticks for 1 month and at the same time on all types of helminths. The result was pleasing: no ticks or fleas for the entire season! I hope that the rest of the living creatures are also missing. From my own experience I can confirm the effectiveness of Bars spray. It is convenient for them to treat the bed, thresholds of entrance doors and the pet itself. The only disadvantage of the spray is that its effectiveness is no more than a week and you need to guard the animal so that it does not eat the chemical.

How to prevent parasites from appearing in a rat?

The best way to treat ornamental rats against all types of parasites is timely prevention. Insects cause discomfort, and medications are toxic and dangerous to animals, no matter what the advertising says.

Here are some rules:

  • Keep the cage clean and change the drinker's water regularly;
  • to feed your pet properly;
  • Ventilate the room;
  • You can buy filler only in a specialized store;
  • Wash your hands and change clothes before handling the animal.

Pay attention to the behavior of decorative rats more often. The first signs of the appearance of dangerous parasites often turn out to be serious illnesses for the animal.

Note: It is strictly forbidden to purchase fillers and food products for rodents in online stores. There are often cases when the owner of a decorative rat is sold products of the worst quality. You should take care of your pet and only trust trusted stores.

Treatment of an infected rat

Determination of the type of parasite and treatment should be carried out by a specialist in a veterinary clinic, since various medications are used to destroy external and subcutaneous parasites. In case of complications, animals are prescribed anti-inflammatory ointments, immunostimulants and a course of vitamins and antibiotics.

Insecticides are highly toxic; if handled incorrectly or in excess of the dose, poisoning of ornamental rats can occur. Ideally, the treatment of the animal is carried out by a veterinarian; it is also permissible to treat fur at home, in a well-ventilated area, in strict compliance with the recommendations of a specialist.

At the same time as treating the animal, throw away the bedding, disinfect the cage and all accessories, change the filler, treat the entire room with repellents. All wooden objects should be thrown away, as they can become a breeding ground for parasites. During treatment, rodents' claws should be trimmed short to avoid scratching the skin.

If rat animals are kept in groups, all animals should be treated multiple times to prevent re-infestation. If an animal has been bitten by fleas or bedbugs, it is recommended to treat all animals living in the house with insecticides, as well as the room itself: carpets, upholstered furniture, mattresses, floors, etc.

Emergency actions after a bite

Here's your action plan:

  • wash the wound with warm water and soap;
  • treat with any antiseptic, for example: iodine, hydrogen peroxide or brilliant green;
  • apply ice to the affected area;
  • take any antihistamine immediately;
  • Do not scratch the wound; itching can be relieved with Finistil-gel or any similar ointment.

Rat fleas have a very small body structure, which helps them freely penetrate into any hard-to-reach places, while inflicting painful and dangerous bites.

The correct selection of products to treat affected areas can save you from a lot of trouble. The reaction to bites shows that the human body is fighting toxins that can enter the internal hypodynamics.

To reduce the risk of possible infections, not only antihistamines are usually prescribed against the most dangerous enemies - rat fleas, but also ointments that relieve severe itching and inflammation of the skin.

The base of ointments differs in texture:

  • homogeneous form;
  • suspension;
  • emulsion;
  • combined form.

The most effective ointments

  • psilo-balm: a powerful antiallergic agent based on diphenhydramine, excellently relieves itching and burning, almost instantly eliminates skin inflammation;
  • nezulin: the drug is made on the basis of various oils and natural plant extracts, effectively and quickly eliminates swelling, itching and redness;
  • Fenistil-gel: contains dimethindene maleate, a histamine receptor blocker, relieves all types of allergic reactions.

There are many other drugs that provide effective treatment for adults and children. It is necessary to study photos of bites from dangerous rat fleas in order to correctly understand what kind of insects you are faced with.

If the affected areas after bites cause you concern, then you should not self-medicate. It is recommended to consult a physician or allergist, who, after diagnosis, may prescribe a visit to a toxicologist, infectious disease specialist, and in especially severe cases, a surgeon.

Rat fleas enter a private home directly on humans or rats. Parasites can enter an apartment by arriving on a person, clothing, bag, etc.

Pets can bring them into the house on themselves. Insects can also easily crawl through slits or ventilation.

How to get rid of parasites if rat fleas have settled in an apartment: urgently carry out a series of measures that will help destroy these individuals.

Fighting methods

Rat fleas are more common in cats and cats than in dogs. This is explained by the fact that the cat breed is a hunter of mice, rats, etc. But if you are bitten by a flea, then start treatment with any pet living in the house.

  • treat your pet with an insecticide;
  • comb and bathe with anti-flea shampoo;
  • carry out the procedure in the bathroom, wash the fleas down the drain;
  • give the animal an antihistamine;
  • put on a flea collar or apply insecticidal drops to the withers.

Rat fleas can settle in the bathroom if at least one of them managed to escape after treating the animal. Therefore, treat everything in the bathroom with an insecticide.

Rat fleas will not remain in the apartment if you place wormwood or tansy in the corners. Remember, parasites are afraid of pungent odors.

Rat fleas are a real threat to humans

Fleas bite any part of the body that is within their reach. If a person stands or moves, the lower legs are affected. A sleeping person can also be bitten on the arms, back and stomach.

Rat flea bites are painful. The enzyme that slows down blood clotting, which the pest introduces with its saliva when biting, is allergenic for the human body. This causes itching and burning.

However, discomfort from bites is not the only harm caused by fleas. This :

  • Plague,
  • tularemia,
  • encephalitis,
  • Salmanellosis.

In addition, rat fleas are indirect carriers of various types of helminths.

Important!

Rat fleas can transmit diseases by inheritance. Therefore, a young, barely born person already poses a threat.

What is the danger to humans?

Fleas in rats easily change hosts. They jump not only onto domestic animals, but can also bite humans, although they do not parasitize them. In addition to pain, itching and burning, contact with the parasite is fraught with inflammation of the lymph nodes, the formation of ulcers, severe headaches and other unpleasant consequences.

But the main danger of the rat flea is the spread of disease. It is a carrier of viral and infectious diseases such as:

  • typhus;
  • encephalitis;
  • salmonellosis;
  • tularemia;
  • plague;
  • anthrax.

And this is not a complete list. After contact with a rat parasite, experts recommend being examined at a clinic.

For reference! A person cannot be called a carrier for fleas due to his lack of fur. In this case, the parasite operates on the principle of eating and retreating. The insect also lays eggs in a secluded place, and not on the host’s body.

How to properly treat a house?

Fleas live in nooks and crannies where there is a lot of dust and dry debris. The first thing to do is get rid of the dirt. During spring cleaning, you will need to look into every corner, move furniture out of the way, and remove carpets from the walls and floors. The trash should be vacuumed up and the trash bag thrown away or washed thoroughly.

After cleaning, you can begin treating with insecticides. It is recommended to spray all suspicious areas where pests may be present. Dust and powders should be placed in hidden areas where children and pets cannot reach insecticides.

In private houses with an estate, deratization is necessary to destroy rats as the main source of parasites. You can read more about rat control here. Then start exterminating fleas.

IMPORTANT: Treatment must be carried out throughout the lot, in basements, sheds and cellars.

In the fight against the most dangerous blood-sucking parasites, all products are enough! To ensure the destruction of rat fleas, it is recommended to combine several insecticides at the same time and repeat the treatment. We wish you a successful hunt!

Preparing an apartment for disinfestation

Before disinfestation, the apartment is wet cleaned. Thoroughly wash floors, baseboards, corners, and back walls of furniture using disinfectants. Shoes are wiped after coming in from outside.

Fleecy surfaces, bed mattresses, and furniture upholstery are vacuumed. Curtains, bed linen and personal items are washed. If possible, dry in the sun or iron.

Clean clothes and food are packed in plastic bags and hidden. Furniture is moved away from the wall so that hard-to-reach places can be reached during disinfestation.

Pet fur must be treated with flea preparations. In order not to harm the pet, the treatment is carried out strictly according to the instructions. The old animal bedding is disposed of.

During the disinfestation period, people and pets are removed from the house.

Eliminating the consequences of bites

To get rid of the bite effect, it is not enough to fight only the itching and red spots. It is often necessary to take care both to eliminate discomfort and to prevent pathogens of various diseases and microorganisms from entering the body. To do this you need to treat site bites, for this you can use:

  1. Lotion with alcohol;
  2. Hydrogen peroxide;
  3. With green;
  4. Iodine.

Ice may help relieve the itching for a while. If fleas have infected a person outside the home, for example, during a hike, and the above remedies are not readily available, then traditional methods such as

  • Juice from Platanus leaves;
  • Infusion of green or black tea;
  • Vinegar solution.

A few simple rules to prevent recurrence

To prevent fleas from appearing in your home, try to wash your floors more often, and sometimes add essential oils and soap to the water when cleaning your floors.

If you know you will be visiting an area likely to have a flea infestation, you should apply a specialized flea treatment beforehand. Such products usually protect not only from fleas, but also from other parasites such as ticks.

To protect yourself from attacks from these pests while traveling outdoors, wear pants that completely cover your leg or at least your ankle. You should also avoid spending long periods of time near the rodent burrow where they live, which means rat fleas are more likely to be present. If you are going on holiday to the tropics, do not choose an expensive hotel, as there are usually a lot of vermin there.

Folk remedies

Folk remedies for fleas are accessible and inexpensive. They do not harm the health of people and animals.

Boric acid has proven itself well in the fight against fleas. It is rubbed into the carpet pile, sprinkled on floors and hard-to-reach places. The product is left on the carpet overnight and vacuumed up in the morning.

Kerosene is an effective but toxic remedy for parasites. To prepare the solution, dissolve 250 grams of kerosene in three liters of water.

The product is used to wash floors and spray surfaces. The treatment is carried out wearing a mask. The next day they do wet cleaning.

Soda and salt are mixed in equal proportions. The mixture is rubbed into carpets, scattered in corners and along baseboards. Leave it overnight and vacuum it the next day.

Parasites are repelled by the smell of pine. The mattress on which the pet sleeps is filled with pine sawdust. They are also placed in rooms in hard-to-reach places.

Tansy has repellent properties. To prepare a decoction, pour 25 grams of dried inflorescences into 200 ml of boiling water. After an hour, when the broth has infused, it is filtered and poured into a spray bottle.

The product is sprayed along the baseboard, between the cracks in the parquet and in hard-to-reach places. Tansy is not used if there are people in the house who suffer from allergies.

Preventive measures

Rat fleas thrive in areas where dust and dry debris accumulate, so regular house cleaning is required to keep them away.

Particular attention should be paid to bedspreads, upholstered furniture, carpets and bedding where pets often rest. In private homes, basement and basement cleaning is also recommended.

In the same situations, if you have to stay in areas where rat fleas and ticks may attack, you should use insect repellents.

The most popular and effective are DETA insecticide sprays, which repel both fleas and ticks.

In addition, to protect yourself from fleas and ticks while in rural areas, it is recommended to wear long pants and try not to stay for a long time near beds and rodent burrows. During business trips or travel, it is better to avoid staying in cheap hotels, which, as a rule, are infested with various parasites.

Chemicals for removing rat fleas

Chemical preparations for the destruction of parasites are presented in the form of sprays, powders, and emulsions.

Before disinfestation, open the windows wide. When using sprays, wear old clothes, a respirator, and medical gloves. The aerosol is sprayed around the perimeter of the room at a level of up to one meter from the floor.

Particular attention is paid to corners, crevices, baseboards, and the area near the trash can and sink. After disinfestation, windows and doors are closed. The apartment is left for at least six hours, and if possible, for a day.

The next day, thoroughly wash the floors. The effect of the drug lasts for two weeks.

Flea powders are used in two ways:

  • prepare a solution for washing floors and surfaces;
  • sprinkle in places where insects accumulate.

Depending on the degree of contamination, the solution is prepared at the rate of 20-40 grams of powder per 1 liter of water. The treatment is carried out wearing a mask and gloves. Six hours after the procedure, floors and work surfaces are washed with a soda-soap solution.

Ways to eliminate rat parasites

For an uninformed person, it is difficult to determine what type of flea has taken up residence. Only an entomologist can identify the pest. However, regardless of the species, extermination methods are the same for all members of the flea family.

Step-by-step plan on how to get rid of rat fleas in your apartment:

  1. Treat your pet if he lives in an apartment. Control fleas on your dog or cat with the following products: shampoos, sprays, drops and collars. Choose them depending on your pet's weight, breed and coat density.
  2. Disinfestation of the apartment is preceded by general cleaning. Vacuum all carpets and pile items thoroughly. Washing textiles and bedding at the highest possible temperature. Fleas die at high and low temperatures; critical values are below zero and above 60°C. Wash floors and window sills with vinegar or essential oil.
  3. Apply insecticide to your home. Wide range: aerosols, including Raptor, Combat, Dichlofos, Reid, Clean House, concentrates that require dilution: Butox, Delsid and perfumes to kill flea larvae. Also use folk remedies.
  4. In case of mass infestation with rat fleas, you can use the Raptor Aquafumigator. The whole process comes down to assembling a simple structure, which is installed at the central point of the room. Once activated, it begins to evaporate a mixture of vapors that penetrates into all corners of the room. Mass extinction of the population is noticeable within the first minutes after application. With one treatment you can get rid of fleas in your apartment.

How do they reproduce?

The females immediately lay eggs, from which the larvae hatch first. At this stage of development, they feed on rotting remains of wool and grass. They also do not disdain the excrement of adult fleas, which contain undigested blood.

Depending on external factors and the availability of a food source, a rat flea can live for several months. Females lay up to 500 eggs during their lives, several at a time. The eggs do not attach to anything, but fall randomly, ending up in cracks and other secluded places, getting stuck in the pile of carpets and paths, etc.

A larva develops in each egg, but it comes out only if favorable conditions exist and, first of all, there is an opportunity to be saturated with blood. Otherwise, the formed larvae, for the time being, remain in the cocoon. Scientists say that in this state the parasite can remain viable for up to 1.5 years.

Habitat of rat fleas

In the wild, fleas live in the nests of rodents such as mice, rats, gophers and gerbils. The lack of species loyalty makes rat fleas very mobile, so they are often found in the fur of cats, dogs, and also in the plumage of birds.

Inside houses, the highest concentration of pests is in the basements, where there are all the conditions for their existence: rodent burrows, temperature and humidity conditions.

Deratization disrupts the normal life of insects, which, having lost their “hosts,” are forced to look for new suppliers of nutrients. Therefore, after exterminating the rodents in the basements, stone fleas begin to attack apartments on the lower floors and find themselves in the entrances.

Insects enter private homes along with rodents that come out at night in search of food. Rat and mouse traps can also attract dangerous bloodsuckers.

Fleas only parasitize rats when they are alive. They are not attracted to dead animals, so when a rat or mouse dies, the parasites rush off in search of new prey.

For your information!

It is possible that fleas entered an apartment or house on a person’s clothes or shoes. There have been cases when larvae entered a new residence along with furniture and even a flower pot.

In humans, fleas hide near baseboards and also like to nest in carpets, pet paraphernalia, and high-humidity areas such as sinks and shower stalls. The larvae's habitat is garbage cans, flower pots: wherever there is organic waste.

Rat fleas: what are they?

All types of fleas are carriers of dangerous infections: typhoid, plague, anthrax, encephalitis, brucellosis, hepatitis, salmonellosis, sleeping sickness and many types of helminth infestations. During epidemics, these insects were responsible for the rapid spread of the disease. Rat fleas are considered one of the most dangerous carriers of viruses. In terms of external characteristics, they are no different from other species. They parasitize mainly rats or small rodents. They do not live permanently on the body of the owner, but use it as a dining room where they come to eat. They settle in the donor’s habitat (burrow, nest, etc.) in order to constantly be able to feed.

Rat fleas parasitize rats or other warm-blooded animals and also carry dangerous diseases.

Rat fleas are not just one species, but a number of species of fleas that parasitize rats and rodents. This includes cat, horse or dog fleas, as well as the famous southern rat flea - a carrier of the typhoid and plague viruses, which caused a third of the population of Europe to die out in the Middle Ages. This species was brought from warm countries several hundred years ago and spread everywhere.

The southern rat flea was first discovered for science by Nathaniel Charles Rothschild (1877-1923), an English banker and entomologist. This happened during his expedition in Egypt. Rothschild collected the largest collection of various insects. Later, one of the studied fleas caused the banker to become infected with a fatal disease. Suffering from encephalitis, Rothschild committed suicide.

Where do rat fleas come from at home?

Fleas can get into an apartment in different ways:

  • you can bring them from the street or from the basement on shoes or clothes;
  • fleas can get into the apartment through holes and cracks in the floor from the entrance or from neighbors;
  • a flea may come on your dog from a walk outside.

Especially in cold weather, insects try to provide themselves with a well-fed and warm place to live. Fleas like to settle in dark and damp places, most often basements or attics, where there is a lot of trash and old rags. In an apartment, fleas will also choose a dark, dusty place with an accumulation of garbage and dirt: baseboards, carpeting, folds of upholstered furniture and old unwashed carpets.

You can determine the presence of these evil insects by the behavior of your pets. If they are bothered by flea bites, then the pets will be constantly nervous, itch (and the scratching can be very large and cause dermatitis in the animal), eat poorly and sleep restlessly. Having examined the animal's fur, you can see small black dots - eggs, fleas themselves or their waste products.

If there are no pets, then you can determine the presence of fleas in the apartment only by the characteristic bite marks directly on your own skin.

Flea bites are painful and cause severe itching and swelling

Why are rat flea bites dangerous?

Rat flea bites are always felt immediately. Unlike other insects, fleas do not have an anesthetic enzyme in their saliva, so the bite is painful, the bite site is swollen and itchy. People may develop an allergic reaction with fever and enlarged lymph nodes.

One of the dermatic diseases that is caused by flea bites is called pulicosis (entomosis).

Characteristic symptoms:

  • swelling at the site of the bite;
  • profuse rashes;
  • severe itching;
  • the appearance of ulcers in the mouth and throat;
  • increased body temperature;
  • headache and mild nervous system disorders;
  • anxiety;
  • difficulty breathing.

Pulicosis (entomosis) is a disease caused by flea bites.
It is strictly forbidden to scratch the bites, despite the severe itching, so as not to introduce pathogenic bacteria into the fresh wound. If you find characteristic bite marks on your skin, severe itching, or other symptoms, you should consult a doctor. It is better not to self-medicate. An allergic reaction can occur with complications, including angioedema.

In addition to an allergic reaction and discomfort, there is a high risk of contracting a number of diseases dangerous to humans, the pathogens of which travel in the body of parasitic insects:

  • salmonellosis;
  • brucellosis;
  • plague;
  • typhus;
  • anthrax;
  • encephalitis;
  • hepatitis.

Also, during a bite, a flea can infect a person with worm eggs. When visiting a doctor because of flea bites, specialists usually prescribe preventative anthelmintic treatment.

What to do if flea bites are found

If bite marks are found, it is necessary to properly treat the bite site:

  • wash with warm water and soap;
  • disinfect with an antiseptic (hydrogen peroxide, alcohol lotion, miramistin, brilliant green, iodine);
  • if severe itching or an allergic reaction occurs, you must take an antihistamine;
  • treat the bite site with an antipruritic agent;
  • consult a doctor.

Remedies that any housewife has at hand will help relieve itching from bites: a weak solution of soda, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, a piece of aloe, tea leaves or tea bags, tincture or decoction of mint, celandine, calendula. Tea tree oil helps a lot: it reduces itching and relieves tissue inflammation. You can relieve possible swelling by rubbing the bite area with ice cubes.

Adviсe

  • Treat all your pets for fleas, even if you think they don't have fleas. This will get rid of fleas faster and reduce the likelihood of their reappearance.
  • Clean the inside of the car, pet shipping boxes, and other areas the rat may have visited.
  • If you still don't know how to bathe and groom your rat, you'll have to learn how to do it. Train your rat to come to your hands (this may take some time). If you don't have a trained rat, lift it under your belly when you pick it up. Never squeeze or grab a rat's tail or paws. Always grab the rat with both hands. Also remember that a sleeping or tired rat is easier to handle.
