Simple do-it-yourself mole traps
The most convenient solution to the question of how to catch a mole is to use purchased equipment. However, in general, such devices are more aimed at scaring the animal away from the territory. This approach not only requires financial investments, but is also not always effective. From this article you will learn all the intricacies of the fight against underground inhabitants. You can make some devices yourself.
Mole trap made from a plastic bottle
So, the first type of trap is a kind of analogue of the commercially available pipe mole trap, but the “locking” element in it works on a slightly different principle.
The photo below shows a mole trap-pipe for comparison:
The mole easily climbs into such a trap, but cannot get out of it. It is implemented as follows:
- Take a plastic bottle with a capacity of 1.5 liters - it will be the basis of the design. It is not worth taking smaller or larger bottles, because a liter bottle is too narrow, and it is difficult for the animal to climb into it, and a two-liter bottle, on the contrary, is too wide, and often does not fit into the animal’s path;
- Either the bottom or the neck of the bottle is cut off - it doesn’t matter. The main thing is to make a free entrance on one side, and on the other there should be a dead end;
- Then take a second bottle of the same size, which, in fact, will clog the mole. The dense part of the neck is cut off (on which the cap is screwed), but a “funnel” is left, and the bottom is also cut off (you can even cut off the bottom half of the bottle);
- In the second bottle, 10-12 longitudinal cuts are made on the tapering part until it becomes a flat part. The result is a kind of long “petals”;
- After this, the second plastic bottle is inserted with its narrowed part into the open passage of the first, and the junction of the two bottles is secured with tape.
That's all, the mole trap is ready. If you place it in a mole passage, the animal will make its way into it along the second (entrance) bottle: under its pressure, the petals will easily bend and do not prevent it from crawling along the joint line, thereby ensuring unhindered access to the main bottle.
After the animal passes, the petals close again. Here he reaches a dead end, turns around, tries to move back, but runs into narrowed petals that he can no longer move apart. The mole is caught.
This mole trap made from plastic bottles is easy to make with your own hands in about 10-15 minutes.
On a note! The locking principle described above is called “against the grain.” While the petals “stroke” the animal, it calmly moves forward “along the fur.” But the animal can no longer get back out, because it moves “against the grain” of the valve - the petals rest against its face and do not move apart at all.
Not everyone takes into account that this mole trap can be easily improved, increasing its efficiency by approximately 2 times, if both the bottom and the top of the main bottle are cut off, and then “valves” are installed on both sides, allowing the animal to only pass inside. In this case, you won’t have to guess from which side the mole will approach the mole trap in its underground passage. Moreover, as practice shows, if there are several animals on the site, a “double” trap can catch two moles at once.
The video at the end of the article shows the process of making a mole trap with your own hands. However, it is important not only to make the mole trap correctly, but also to install it correctly on the site, since the final result of its work also largely depends on this.
Odorous liquids and substances
First of all, it is necessary to determine the path of the animal. In each fresh molehill you need to make a small hole. You can use a stick or drill for this. You need to get to the horizontal gallery. Pour one glass of the special mixture into it. It is prepared from kerosene and fuel oil in the following ratio: 1 to 2. After this, the hole must be filled with earth, then trampled with feet. You can also put the following in molehills:
- Shag.
- Tobacco.
- Bleach.
- Rotten fish.
- Pieces of mothballs.
- Tow soaked in tar or oil.
Due to the bad smell, moles leave the area. At first, these measures will surprise the animal, and it will go away for a while. However, this does not exclude the possibility of the animal returning to its previous areas.
How to catch a mole with such a trap?
A mole trap made of plastic bottles should be installed inside the mole passage, located between fresh earth emissions. Such passages are sometimes (but not always) clearly visible on the surface of the site, since their arch is slightly raised by the animal when moving, as a result of which a long earthen ridge is formed above the passage.
It is this roller that needs to be carefully excavated (the passage itself is located at a depth of about 10-15 cm). Then the passage needs to be slightly cleared of the ground and slightly deepened in the place where the trap will be installed.
It is better to dig out the mole's underground passage with a garden trowel. It is not advisable to use a shovel, since it severely damages the passage itself, and the mole may not “want” to move along it and climb into the trap in the future.
Important! You should not install a mole trap made from a plastic bottle at the entrance to a tunnel or in a pile of soil spilled out by a mole. The animal may no longer use such a molehill, but the underground passage itself will be inspected regularly. Therefore, the mole trap is placed precisely in the passage between the animal’s exits to the surface.
Before installation, it is advisable to pour a little soil into the mole trap so that the animal does not notice the sudden transition of normal soil into slippery plastic.
It can also be useful to put several earthworms in the main bottle - the mole smells them well and can ignore suspicion when touching the plastic if it smells food.
The trap itself is placed in motion, its valve is directed in the direction from which the animal is supposed to approach it. If the trap is double-sided, then its orientation does not matter.
The top of the mole trap should be sprinkled with earth (but so as not to cover the entrances to it!) and covered with a wooden shield or a very thick opaque cloth. The main task in this case is to eliminate the light in the trap so that it is as dark in it as in the rest of the passage (although it is believed that moles are blind, this is not entirely true - they are able to distinguish between light and darkness, and also see outlines items).
After this, the trap should be checked two to three times a day. Most often, a mole is caught at night or in the evening.
On a note. Keep in mind that due to the accelerated metabolism, the mole cannot fast for a long time. It may not survive even 24 hours in a mole trap, and therefore the trap should be checked at least twice a day, and immediately after finding the animal, take it out of the area as quickly as possible and release it into the wild.
Of course, the more traps are installed on the site, the faster it will be possible to catch all the moles (often only one mole lives in a small area, since these animals are very jealous of protecting their territory). If the mole trap is made in a single copy, then with a certain probability it will have to be moved from one move to another if it remains empty for more than 4-5 days.
The effectiveness of homemade scarecrows
Outwardly, moles look like cute and harmless animals.
But at the same time, they can cause significant harm to the garden plot. Moles by nature are blind animals. Thanks to this, their hearing is highly sensitive. Accurate determination of the permanent habitat can be difficult because the family has several exits from the burrow. Therefore, determining its location is not easy. The task is further complicated by the fact that the depth of the hole can reach several meters. As a result, the right solution is to make homemade turntables from available or scrap materials.
Moles, in addition to causing harm, can also be beneficial. They constantly need food of animal origin. The animals eat beetles, caterpillars and worms in large numbers. Therefore, when deciding on the need to fight, you need to correlate these two facts. In addition, during the digging process, moles loosen and mix the soil.
In addition to the methods described above, you can use simple alarm clocks. You will need a few pieces in total. Clock mechanisms are placed in glass jars and placed in pits. In the process of fighting, you will need to set alarms several times a day for different times. As a result, moles will quickly leave the territory due to the regular and shrill ringing.
To increase efficiency, you can take a medium-diameter polymer pipe and drill many holes. When the clock mechanism is triggered, the hum will spread along its entire length and in all directions. Intense ringing will quickly force ferrets to change their habitat.
Repellers
Taking advantage of the fact that moles are very sensitive to various sounds. A number of manufacturers currently produce electroacoustic devices. First of all, ultrasonic devices. They do not cause any harm to humans, but for moles they become a problem for daily existence on the site.
Among the advantages is the penetration of sounds and other vibrations everywhere, despite obstacles. Typically, such devices operate from autonomous power sources, so they can be placed anywhere in the garden.
Mole traps
In cases where there are really a lot of moles, or for some unknown reason it is not possible to get rid of them using simple methods, mole traps will help. These devices will allow you to catch females ready to breed in early spring.
To determine the location for the trap, you need to press down the mole's passage.
Installation in such areas ensures quick capture of the animal. The main passages are often located in straight directions along fences, fences and foundations. The meandering lines are temporary, so setting traps there will not be effective.
Mole traps consist of several elements:
- input ring;
- pressure lever;
- guard ledge;
- alertness itself;
- spring ring.
The frame is made of a piece of steel wire 3.5–4 mm thick. Between the support and pressure zones there is a spring in the form of a spiral of 2.5 turns. The spring should create a pressing action of 4–5 kg and reliably press the animal to the lower area of the entrance ring with a weight of 2–2.5 kg.
Operating principle:
- When preparing the device, the pressure clamp is raised in the upper direction;
- the design provides for the penetration of the mole to a sufficient depth before the mechanism is triggered;
- the animal touches the horn with its head and thereby releases the clamping device.
Over the course of one day, several animals move along the selected path. At the same time, other individuals bypass the captured animal, making a small undermining. Therefore, along the entire path, you can catch a large number of moles at one time.
The main reason for the invasion of animals into garden plots is the looseness and fertility of the soil. Due to this, the prevalence of pests is highest. Since they are a favorite food of moles, the latter's colonies can be quite impressive.
All of the above methods have been tested many times by experienced gardeners. The production of some of them does not require financial investment at all. But the result will exceed all expectations, and uninvited guests will quickly disappear from the occupied territory.
Gardens and vegetable gardens are a good help both in terms of food and in terms of relaxation for the soul. But everything that is grown on personal plots faces many dangers - beetles, larvae, birds, moles. And if chemicals help fight plant diseases or insect pests, then it is best to scare away birds and moles from the site, rather than destroy them. A primitive design will help with this - a windmill made from a plastic bottle, made with your own hands from scrap materials.
How to catch a mole in a jar?
There is another method that has been tested many times in practice to catch a mole: in a jar, pan, bucket or plastic bottle with the top cut off. This kind of mole trap can also be easily done with your own hands - for this you will need to make a kind of trap pit.
Let's look at the manufacturing procedure for this mole trap:
- You can take a large five-liter plastic drinking water bottle; you need to cut off the tapered top. Some gardeners successfully use three-liter glass jars - their width is quite sufficient for a mole to be caught in them (the animal is comparable in size to a rat). You can also use a suitable size pan or bucket; it is only important that the height of the trap is at least 25-30 cm, otherwise there is a chance that the mole will get out of it;
- Then the mole's passage is excavated and a hole is dug, identical in diameter and height to the trap;
- A prepared mole trap (container) is inserted into the hole;
- After this, the cracks along the edges of the trap are filled with earth, the earth here is compacted a little. As a result, the edges of the container should be hidden with a compacted earthen roller so that the mole does not feel them;
- The top of the trap is covered with a wooden shield or thick fabric so that light does not penetrate into the trap and does not scare away the animal.
Such a mole trap, installed in a gap in the underground passage of the mole, works even simpler than the one described above from two plastic bottles. The animal simply falls into the jar (or other deep container), moving along its course.
You also need to check the trap at least twice a day so as not to starve the caught animal.
Is it worth catching moles with fish hooks?
There is another cruel way to catch a mole - catching it with a fishing hook. The principle is simple: a small hole is made in the arch of the passage, into which a fishing line with several fishing hooks is lowered (usually tees are used to be sure), the end of this fishing line is tied next to a metal pin driven into the ground or simply to a strong stick lying on the ground.
The mole, going along its course, runs into a fishing hook and it digs into the body, piercing the skin. The animal cannot free itself and tugs on the fishing line, which is visible on the surface (sometimes a bell is tied to the pin, which at that moment begins to ring). After this, the gardener can only dig out the passage with a garden shovel and pull the struggling mole to the surface directly by the fishing line.
During such manipulations, the mole's side or abdomen is sometimes literally torn apart with a hook. And it is quite obvious that the knackers who use such a means of capture will definitely not stand on ceremony with the animal after it is caught.
There is an even more sophisticated way of mocking a mole - using the same fishing hooks with earthworms pre-attached to them. The animal will try to eat such bait, and the hook will stick into its mouth or throat.
On a note
Perhaps somewhere here lies the line when cruelty to animals begins to border on sadism: if a simple gardener at the dacha is able to catch moles in such ways, then why are we surprised when somewhere in a foreign country a live seal’s nose is sawed off with a grinder or They skin foxes alive on fur farms.
Let us only add here that in terms of efficiency and labor intensity, catching a mole with a hook is comparable to using live traps. But if adequate gardeners try to save the life of the animal and not injure it, then sadists, of course, will be more interested in figuring out how to catch a mole with fishing hooks.
About the effectiveness of traps made from plastic bottles
As practice shows, hand-made mole traps made from plastic bottles work no less effectively than various flayer crushes, traps and crossbows. Moles get caught in bottles just as often, and the overall reliability of the structure is determined not so much by its performance as by the correct installation of the trap in the garden plot.
In particular, the choice of the mole's course in which the trap will be set plays an important role. If the passage is old and rarely visited by the animal, then the mole trap may stand in vain for several days, and the disappointed gardener will eventually reject the product, deeming it ineffective.
In addition, a horizontal trap with one trap entrance may not work simply because the mole will each time approach it from the other side - from the side of the dead end. Thus, the animal will not fall into the trap itself, and if it finds an obstacle, it may also try to make a detour.
Practice shows that trapping pits made from cans and pots dug under passages generally work more effectively than “against the grain” traps. The mole does not have time to notice them, and cannot avoid falling into such a mole trap.
"Pitchfork"
The last, easiest to manufacture device, in appearance resembles a fork with a metal blade welded to it. This is an analogue of an industrial trap of this type.
These “pitchforks” are made by summer residents according to their own understanding. There are no drawings. And this is good, since it is not difficult to kill a mole, it is more difficult to tense up and take it away. Still, moles are more beneficial to the ecosystem than harmful.
The outer teeth of the “forks” are the “legs” of the trap that hold it in a vertical position. The working part is average. It is a hollow tube into which a harpoon is inserted. The harpoon is fitted with a spring, the ends of which are secured to the harpoon and the tube. When the trap is set, the spring stretches, and when released, it contracts, and the harpoon pierces the animal’s body with force.
The “trigger” is the same “spatula”, fixed movably. It has a groove that allows the harpoon to be held in the upper position. When the mole throws dirt onto the spatula, it moves and the harpoon falls. But such a trap will require serious skills in working with iron and the ability to weld parts, so it makes sense to consider easier-to-make traps that are accessible even to single summer residents.
Mole trap
Review
I tried to set a trap from a store in the form of a pipe. Moles are not so bad, they go around. I found a video on YouTube on how to make a mole trap in the form of a pitchfork with a harpoon. I spent two days making it. Not only that, but it turned out to be difficult to install so that it would work properly. Moles are also different. The principle there is based on the fact that the trap is triggered when the animal throws the earth onto this trigger blade. And different moles throw earth at different distances. I was tired of changing the distance of the “scapula” from the trigger device. And go chase these moles. Every time you have to dig this trap again. I chased one specimen for two weeks and dug up the beds just as well as he did. He spat and moved on to the buried cans.

The disadvantages of all such mechanical traps are that they have to be reinstalled each time, digging them in a new place. If earth or stones get into moving parts, the traps do not work correctly. When one mole is caught, these traps no longer work until they are set again. In live traps you can catch as many animals as will fit into the container. Yes, and killing animals just because they lead their usual way of life is wrong. It is not they who have invaded our home, it is we who are destroying their habitat.
Complex traps
There are also more serious designs of mole traps, the manufacture of which should be approached with great diligence or purchased at a specialized store. Energy and financial costs will be fully compensated by efficiency.
Pinwheel
The use is more aimed at repelling underground pests. To create a pinwheel you will need a metal pin and one or more tin cans.
Choose reinforcement approximately two meters high. It must be firmly stuck into the ground and a makeshift weather vane placed on top. To create it, the tin is cut in three places and the plates are folded back like airplane blades.
Loop trap for mole
You can catch a mole in the garden using this homemade product. There are plenty of drawings and videos of creating a mole trap with your own hands using this principle. They reveal all the intricacies of making the device.
Plunger design
The mole will not be able to survive if such a system is used, and independent production requires certain skills.
The advantages of a purchased device include:
- high power;
- the trigger mechanism is triggered by the movement of the substrate during the restoration of the tunnel by the mole;
- does not require adjustment before installation.
The disadvantages include difficulties during installation and operation on rocky soil, because the mechanism can jam.
How to catch moles with a wire mole trap
It consists of several parts - a guard and a frame made from a single piece of wire with a diameter of 3.2-4 mm. The pressing part is a lever that operates on the principle of a spring. A trap is set in a fresh tunnel, passing through which the mole ends up in a deadly loop. As a result, the animal is nailed to the ground with a force equal to 2 kg.
Working mechanisms
If the mole population exceeds 5-10 individuals, then you cannot do without traps. They work flawlessly. You can make the structures yourself, but it is preferable to purchase spring triggers in specialized stores. Thus, you will not get hurt during the manufacturing process, the design will be durable, and in case of breakdown or failure to perform functions, you can always order repairs using a warranty card.
Trap for an underground animal
A mole trap is a ready-made device, upon contact with which the animal is killed by suffocation or fracture of the cervical vertebrae. The basis for traps is a wire base.
You can free territories from moles using scissor traps, plunger mechanisms, all kinds of nooses, and crossbows.
Catch with a scissor trap
By choosing a trap presented in a design similar to scissors, you will certainly know that it has worked. This type of mole trap is quite well known among gardeners due to its advantages:
- It's easy to install. You need to insert the handles into the soil and cock the mechanism.
- You can see that the trap has worked even from afar.
- Sensitivity is adjustable.
Disadvantages of the pest control method:
- The small size is sometimes not enough to place the device in a tunnel at depth.
- If you don't adjust the sensitivity, it triggers on leaves, stones, and nuts.
- In cold weather, frozen handles do not function.
Since the main harvest time is the summer-autumn season, and fresh passages are located near the surface, the disadvantages will not play a decisive role during the purchase.
Skat-1 system against the blind beast
Plunger designs
In terms of efficiency, plunger designs are not inferior to scissor traps. There are two main types: “Scat-1”, “Scat-2”. A mole trap, regardless of type, is designed to kill underground inhabitants.
The operating principle of Skat-1 is similar to the operation of a crossbow. To start work, you need to stick the legs into the soil on the sides of the mole's hole, cock the spring, which inserts the guard into the hole.
Hitting the guard, a spring is activated, which releases three spokes into the mole, killing the animal.
How does Skat-2 work? Catching occurs similarly to the first plunger design, only, having touched the guard, the staples clamp the pest, breaking the backbone or limbs.
This method of fighting is considered professional, although live traps will bring more results, since after the plunger mechanism is triggered, you need to re-tension the spring, but a large pipe can accommodate 2-3 adult individuals at once.
Will a loop trap work?
A suffocating trap for a mole is made of wire. This loop is easy to make yourself. If you don’t have enough time, then similar mechanisms can be found in agricultural stores; the price relative to other traps is not so high.
Like any type of trap, a wire loop is laid in the move. Crawling through a round hole, the mechanism is triggered, and the mole is squeezed by a deadly noose.
The device is designed for reusable use, so that by purchasing several traps, you will be able to clear the land of moles that prefer to settle in families.
Harpoon fishing
Another type will be various crossbows. This rather labor-intensive process of catching moles can harm even humans. How does a mole trap work?
Harpoon for catching underground animals
- A pipe filled with gunpowder and shot, sealed on one side, is used.
- Nichrome wire is connected to the gunpowder.
- In the same way, connect the motion sensor at a distance of 20-30 cm from the crossbow.
- As the sensor passes by, the wire heats up and the device kills the animal.
An absolutely inhumane method of fighting is not only labor-intensive, but in most cases it is useless, because if the mechanism does not work, the animal will be injured and will die for a long time and painfully.
A mole is not a fish
Particularly “sophisticated” hunting enthusiasts recommend catching moles with a hook. Such an action is inherently useless, since the animal is injured and ultimately dies. How do you catch moles with hooks?
Triple fishing hooks on the fishing line are lowered into the hole, bringing the rest of the fishing line out. While making its way in search of food, the mole runs into sharp hooks that pierce the skin. Trying to free itself, the animal begins to move convulsively, thus moving the stick to which the fishing line is attached.
It is almost impossible to pull out a hook that is caught in the muscle fibers of the animal, and the mole slowly dies for several days from the injuries received and lost blood.
The difference between homemade and factory models
Industrial repellers are made on a completely different principle: they work based on the generation of ultrasound. As a rule, the most effective models are not from domestic, but from foreign manufacturers. Japanese repellers are usually praised.
As for homemade repellers, moles quickly get used to them and can build their holes next to such windmills. The most effective of them are alarm clock-based devices.
How to completely get rid of moles in garden plots
Some gardeners are annoyed by moles to such an extent that they decide to take extreme measures to physically destroy them.
They begin to use poisonous chemicals, which, along with their immediate purpose, destroy beneficial earthworms.
Someone (most likely fishermen) even throws their gear into the holes...
Peace to the world!
Natural enemies
Your pets can help you in the fight against moles; for example, cats and dogs (especially dachshunds and fox terriers) are considered to be quite dexterous and skillful hunters of these underground pests. Therefore, take your pets to the dacha more often and let them get their own food in the wild.
Video: Dachshund fights moles (at least he tries)
Tin repellers
Many summer residents, going to their dacha in the summer, stock up on beer in metal cans. After the beer is drunk, many summer residents throw them away, but in vain! After all, they can be used to make an effective mole repeller.
And again, you can start with the simplest option, when the beer can is simply put on the pin. The jar is light enough, so it begins to make sounds at the slightest wind. If you take a rope and sort of string the jars on it so that they touch each other, like a garland. This garland can be mounted on two pins made of wood or metal. The most difficult option is the spinner.
Products made from such scrap materials are light, simple, but effective.
In the photo below you can see a more complex design of the repeller.
Not everyone can install such a mechanism, although in fact it is not that complicated if you study it in more detail.
What to do with a caught animal{q}
Live traps should be checked every 3-4 hours. Since moles are very sensitive to hunger strikes, they need to be removed from traps as soon as possible - a mole cannot live for more than 24 hours without food due to its accelerated metabolism.
Immediately after catching the mole, you must remove it from the trap: this must be done with thick gloves so that it does not bite through the skin. Then the animal must be taken outside the site to a distance of about 1-1.5 km - then the mole will no longer be able to return to its territory.
A mole caught in a mole trap must be taken out of the area, carried away to a distance of about 1 km and released.
When freeing a captive, you need to be careful: moles have very sharp, albeit small, teeth, with which they can bite quite painfully (after all, moles are, first of all, predators). The epidemiological danger of moles has been poorly studied, and it is never possible to guarantee for sure that when an animal bites it it will not give a person some kind of bacterial “joy”.
The release operation itself should be carried out immediately after discovery of the capture. As noted above, an extra few hours of hunger can be fatal for a mole.
How to make a mole trap with your own hands
The caught mole must be taken approximately 1-1.5 km from the site and released - in this case, the animal will definitely not come back. It is advisable to release the mole into the wild in dense grass, plantings, bushes or forests, where it can quickly bury itself and not be caught by a predator.
If the trap is supposed to be set again immediately after being caught, then the caught animal can be temporarily shaken out into a bucket.
All manipulations with captured moles, as well as mice, rats, shrews, voles, blind men and other living creatures that often also get caught in a mole trap, should be carried out wearing thick construction gloves. As mentioned above, the mole has very sharp teeth, and in rare cases it can be a carrier of diseases dangerous to humans, so its bites should be avoided in every possible way.
Ideally, there is no need to touch the caught animal at all; it is simply shaken out of the pipe. If there is a need to take it with your hand, then it grabs either the tail or the scruff of the neck.
It is important to understand that if additional measures are not taken to protect the area from moles, then in most cases the animals will enter it again periodically, and they will have to be caught almost every year. For example, a very effective (albeit expensive) way to protect a site from moles is to dig a fine mesh net into the ground around the perimeter of the site to a depth of 70-80 cm and a height of about 20 cm above ground level - this will prevent new moles from entering the territory.
Mole fences and other methods of site protection
The use of fencing is not so much a way to get rid of moles in the garden, but a means of protecting the area after the fight has been carried out. If there are already moles on the site, then, of course, they cannot be driven out by fencing.
But if you managed to get rid of moles using the above means, then the reappearance of pests can be prevented once and for all by creating an insurmountable mechanical barrier.
Fencing the area around the perimeter
The most obvious and very reliable way to create a fence is to dig a trench at least 80 cm deep along the perimeter of the site, then install a mesh with a mesh of 1-2 cm in it and fill it up. Instead of mesh, you can also use slate, crushed stone, concrete, but in the standard case, mesh is the most inexpensive option. The cost of fencing it is approximately 300 rubles per linear meter of the border (including the work of digging a trench).
In the same way, you can protect flower beds, greenhouses and garden beds from moles, and in this case the costs will be significantly lower.
Practice shows that if the site is fenced with a solid fence with a sufficiently deep (up to 40 cm) foundation, then this is also reliable protection against moles.
However, theoretically, the animal is capable of digging under such a foundation, and even under a fence buried to a depth of 80 cm, because a mole’s nest can be located at a depth of up to 2.5 meters. However, in practice, 80 cm in most cases is more than enough.
Protecting your lawn from moles
To prevent the appearance of molehills on the lawn, it is enough to lay a plastic mole net horizontally over the entire area of the lawn at a depth of 5-10 cm from the surface of the ground. This mesh is covered with rolled turf on top, or covered with soil and lawn grass is sown on it. The mole will not be able to get out from under the fence, and even if there are passages here, no signs will be noticeable on the soil surface.
Sometimes a mole net is even simply placed on an existing lawn, and it quickly disappears (sinks) into the grass that grows through the cells.
For vegetable gardens and flower beds, this method is less suitable, since it is complicated by the need to plant certain plants.
Plants as a living barrier
Sometimes they try to protect a garden plot from moles by planting various plants on it (usually along the perimeter), which moles are supposed to avoid. Among such plants, the following are most often used: black beans, castor beans, imperial hazel grouse, marigolds, onions, garlic, daffodils, etc.
However, it should be said that this method does not have proven effectiveness, and there are no statistically significant cases of successful protection of an area with just such plants (there are only isolated mentions).
If you have personal experience of getting rid of moles in your garden (positive or negative), then be sure to leave your review at the bottom of this page, in the comments field.

Remedies for moles:
Reliable design, can be installed instantly, operates in the tunnel on both sides, and is safe for pets.
A simple, inexpensive and yet very effective mole trap.
Highly effective sound-vibration mole repeller, coverage area up to 750 sq. m.
Alarm clock repeller
To be effective, you need to have several alarm clocks that have different alarm times. Alarm clocks are placed in jars, which are closed with lids and installed in different places on the site. The best option is to bury containers with alarm clocks in the ground. As a result, after a certain time, all alarm clocks underground will start to go off stably. Sounds regularly made in the area will force moles to look for more comfortable places.
The second option consists of a pipe buried in the ground into which an alarm clock is placed on a string. Thanks to the rope, such an alarm clock can always be taken out of the pipe.
On a note! Alarm clock repellers are the most effective. As a rule, battery-powered alarm clocks are better suited because they don’t have to be constantly adjusted like mechanical ones.
Solutions to the problem
Let's get down to business. In fact, there are quite a few methods and ways to get rid of moles on your property. All of them are radically different from each other, both in cost and effectiveness, and in the essence and nature of the impact on the threat in the form of an animal.
Let us highlight several general categories of existing methods of counteracting these pest animals into separate groups, namely:
- preventive measures;
- use of repellents;
- use of traps;
- poisoning of pests with pesticides;
- use of lethal traps.
The first 2 categories of mole control methods can and should be considered the most humane, of course.
Preventive methods, as a rule, include measures taken in advance to prevent the possibility of a digging animal entering the area, or the organization of the most uncomfortable conditions for the life and habitat of animals in a given area.
These usually include the construction of so-called mole nets, which are installed either along the perimeter of the site, digging 40-60 cm into the ground in a circle, or laid horizontally under a previously removed birthing ball of soil in order to protect the site from the penetration of animals from underground .
The method of repelling moles from an area involves the use of various acoustic and vibration devices, as well as bio-flavoring agents to create an environment that irritates the sensitive underground animal.
This is a rather interesting and original topic, which we will not dwell on in detail in this review. Let's just say that there are many varieties of such repellers, including solar-powered sound and vibration generators, which have good reviews from their users.
Today we will pay somewhat more attention to more radical and decisive methods of eliminating the problem of moles on the site.
Other mole traps, their advantages and disadvantages
No less often than pipe-shaped live traps, slightly less convenient methods of catching moles are used: in buckets, deep pans, glass jars or wide plastic bottles with a cut neck. They are buried in the gap in the mole's passage, the edges are covered with a roller of compacted earth, and the opened passage is covered on top with boards so that sunlight does not enter it.
Moving along the way, the mole simply falls into such a trap “pit” and cannot get out of it. When checking, the animal is taken out with a gloved hand and taken away from the site. This method is also quite effective, although it is more labor-intensive to implement than using a good pipe mole trap.
Unfortunately, moles are also often killed with special traps (crushes, crossbows, snares...) Their designs are varied, but their main disadvantage is the inhumane destruction of animals, which are only to blame for the fact that they turned out to be a person’s neighbors in the area.
But various methods of repelling moles are for the most part less effective than traps. Many of them do not always work (for example, noise, as well as rotten fish, perfume, ammonia, carbide), others are harmful to the soil and its inhabitants (pouring kerosene, gasoline into holes, pouring Alphos tablets, fumigating with insecticidal and sulfur bombs). But the effectiveness of other methods is initially questionable: sticking reeds into the ground, burying feces in underground passages, etc.
In some cases, special mole repellers (not all models on the market) provide a good repellent effect. However, read more about repellers in other articles on our website. And before that, do not forget to leave a review about your personal experience of using a mole trap-pipe, if you have such experience (to leave a review, just write it in the comment field at the bottom of this page).
Another effective, but inhumane method is to catch a mole like a fish on an improvised “donka”.
Too much water can kill plants.
Key methods of mole control
Having discovered at least one heap that has appeared, left by a mole, you should not hesitate. First of all, you need to send a signal that his presence on the site is highly undesirable. To start the fight, you can use rational and humane methods:
- garden shovel. To implement this fishing method, you will need to pick up a shovel and wait until the animal begins to dig through the soil from the very top. At the same time, you need to behave quietly, otherwise the noise will alert the mole, and it will crawl deep underground. After the soil begins to rise, it is necessary to quickly thrust the equipment into the center of the pile of earth and sharply throw it to the surface. There is a high probability that the mole will end up on the shovel and will be thrown away along with the ground. In this case, the bright sun should blind the animal, and it will be very easy to catch;
- DIY mole traps. To create them, you need to bury three-liter jars or any other similar containers in the ground with mole passages, which will be half filled with liquid. Crawling past such a trap, the animal will be locked in a place from which there will be no way out. After construction, you need to mark the place so that you don’t forget later where exactly the jar is buried;
- carbide. As a rule, it is poured into an excavated passage, filled with water, and sprinkled with soil on top. After some time, the substance begins to react, releasing a gas that negatively affects moles. In this situation, there is a chance that they will retreat;
- glass bottles. The container must be buried at an angle of forty-five degrees, and the neck should be left above the surface of the earth. The wind blowing inside the bottle will provoke peculiar sounds, similar to music, which moles hate so much. This method is not suitable for lawns, since the neck hidden in the grass can cause injury;
- water. You need to insert a hose connected to a water supply into the mole passage and allow the liquid to flow until it begins to flow from the hole itself. This method has been tested for years, but is not always effective, since the animal can create such a global system of passages that water cannot get into all the holes;
- reed The stems of the reeds are lowered into the mole holes in such a way that a stick half a meter long should rise from above. In a duet with the wind, they will create sounds that affect the hearing of moles. There is a possibility that the animal will go to look for another comfortable habitat;
- cans. It is necessary to stick iron rods near each tubercle, and in turn tie tin cans to them so that they do not sway from gusts of wind. Hitting the cans against the bars will create an unpleasant vibration for the mole;
- "fragrant" ridges. Underground animals have a very sensitive sense of smell. They literally cannot stand the smell of onions, garlic, chili peppers, and legumes. To repel moles, you can plant similar plants around the perimeter of the site;
- Castor oil. To obtain a concentrate, two hundred grams of oil must be mixed with three tablespoons of detergent
- dishes. Then dissolve two tablespoons of the resulting mixture in four liters of liquid and pour it over the perimeter around the dug passages.
There is no single correct method that will give a 100% guarantee of expelling a mole from the territory.
The design and principle of operation of a mole trap in the shape of a pipe
The essence of the work of a mole trap-pipe is that a mole can very easily, almost effortlessly, climb inside it, but is no longer able to get out. This effect is ensured by a special door design that operates in the “entrance” only mode.
An important point (in case you decide to make the device yourself): the doors should be located at both ends of the pipe, because it is not known in advance from which side of the underground passage the animal will enter the trap. In addition, the length of the pipe should not be too short - this is necessary so that, on occasion, several moles can fit into it at once.
An important advantage of an industrially produced mole trap-pipe is the ability to disassemble it: such a mole trap consists of two parts of the same length, which are joined to each other and latched with a special lock. This is very convenient when releasing a captured animal into the wild: the lock opens, the two parts of the pipe are disconnected, and the mole is carefully shaken out onto the ground.
Although it may seem that a one-piece pipe is somewhat more reliable compared to a collapsible structure (since there is no lock that could break), however, in practice, in this regard, in general, there is not much difference, since it would take to break the lock – we still need to try harder. Thus, perhaps the only significant advantage of a one-piece trap is approximately half the price.
You can see how the mole trap-pipe works and how a mole gets caught in it in the video given at the end of this article.
The mole trap is made with your own hands from a piece of plastic or metal pipe with a diameter of 9-12 cm and a length of 40-50 cm. Two holes are made along the edges, onto which the doors will be attached with hinges.
It is advisable to observe the indicated dimensions, since a large individual will not fit into a pipe that is too narrow, a short pipe will not accommodate several animals at once, and a pipe that is too wide is inconvenient for installation, since it will not correspond to the average diameter of the mole passage.
Further:
- Two oval-shaped doors are cut from a sheet of aluminum or from the bottom of tin cans. The major axis should be slightly larger than the inner diameter of the pipe, the minor axis should be slightly smaller;
- At the top, in the narrow part of each door, two holes are drilled;
- Wire loops are inserted into the holes, the door is inserted into the pipe at an angle of the lower part inward, the loop is put on the hole in the pipe;
- The same thing is repeated with the second door.
There is also an option in which not loops are used, but a nail inserted transversely into the upper part of the pipe. The door is hung on it using a special bend, which is made after cutting out the door, for example, using pliers.
In both cases, it is useful to make several holes with a diameter of about 1.5 cm in the upper part of the pipe - this will allow you to install the trap once and not constantly remove it for checking - the caught mole will be visible through the holes.
Also very popular is the option of a mole trap made from plastic bottles. In this case, not doors are used, but two necks from other bottles. They make 10-12 longitudinal cuts, first cutting off the hard part onto which the lid is screwed. The resulting “petals” operate as a door that allows access only in one direction—the mole climbs inside by simply pressing on them with his body, and cannot push them apart to get out.
The effectiveness of all these types of traps is approximately the same if they are installed correctly.
Today you can easily buy a pipe mole trap in online stores. Many particularly enterprising citizens have mastered making them with their own hands on a semi-industrial scale, and today there are both imported high-quality traps on sale for 400-500 rubles apiece, dismountable and very convenient, as well as handicraft products, somewhat clumsy and not so pleasant to handle, but they cost almost twice as much.
To cities far from Moscow, some online stores deliver such devices by mail or transport company.
For one plot of up to 10 acres, it is often enough to buy one mole trap-pipe. With the right approach, all the “local” moles are caught in it quite quickly, and in a few days you can catch all the pests on the site (while not forgetting that they may be replaced by new moles after some time).
A quick and inexpensive way to make homemade mole traps is a bottle trap. The fishing object resembles a small piece of pipe, designed to fit the size of the animal, with doors at the ends that open only inward.
To make such a trap, you will need 2 or 3 1.5 liter plastic bottles. For a one-sided model you will need 2 containers, for a double-sided one - 3. The difference between these options is that when making a one-sided trap, the bottom of the main bottle is not cut off, leaving a dead end. Do-it-yourself double-sided plastic mole trap - basic manufacturing steps (for one-sided the principle is similar):
- Cut off the bottom and neck of one bottle, you will get a small pipe - this is the base.
- From the other two, cut off the neck, leaving a small funnel, and the upper part, 5-7 cm below the beginning of the narrowing of the bottle upward.
- On the resulting workpiece, cut the tapering part into ribbons, the length of the expanding part of the bottle.
- After this, the cut pieces are inserted into the main part with the sharp end in the middle.
- The animal, crawling along the way, will spread the “ribbons” and fall into a trap from which it will no longer be able to get out.
To quickly catch a mole in the garden using a bottle trap, you need to follow certain recommendations when installing it:
- You will never be able to catch a mole with a trap set in a pile of loose earth. It is recommended to install the mole trap in a fresh horizontal near-surface tunnel.
- When excavating a passage, you need to act extremely carefully so that the damage is minimal.
- After digging a hole, it is recommended to restore the adjacent areas of the mole tunnel.
- The installed trap must be covered with an opaque dark-colored material, and additionally sprinkled with earth on top. Even a small ray of light penetrating into the pit reduces the effectiveness of the device several times.
- To lure the animal, you can put several earthworms inside the trap, because... their smell attracts underground animals.
- After installation, it is recommended to check the trap every 5-7 hours. Due to their fast metabolism, moles can only live for 18-24 hours without food, so this trap can turn into a torture chamber, guaranteeing a painful death for the animal.
Popular live traps
Operating principle of the device
If the mole has already moved in, then repellers are unlikely to have an effect. Subterranean animals that prefer silence become accustomed to the noise of windmills constructed from polypropylene bottles or low-frequency signals from ultrasonic devices.
You can save money, time and preserve the harvest using live traps.
Easy-to-make devices are useful for fighting moles in small areas: in the garden, garden, near the house.
Plastic bottle trap
In specialized stores you can find a trap in the form of a plastic pipe. You can make homemade mole traps that are identical in functionality with your own hands. The operating principle of a purchased one will not differ from a home-made trap.
What is required for the device to work effectively?
- You need to put bait in the middle of the pipe.
- If you design a trap yourself, consider the volume of the bottles so that the mole’s body can fit inside.
- You need to install the mole trap correctly.
While picking up a delicious meal in the form of beetles or earthworms, the mole will not be able to get out of the trap on his own.
How to design a trap
Available: plastic bottle fixture
How to make a mole trap from plastic bottles? Making a homemade trap is a little different from a purchased pipe. On portals dedicated to the topic of gardening, you will be able to find the necessary drawings, and before starting work, see what the result should be.
- Take three empty plastic bottles of the same size.
- Using a utility knife or scissors, cut off the bottom and top of the first bottle.
- The remaining two need to be cut approximately in the middle. Only the tops are required for the trap.
- Cut the neck, creating “petals”.
- Place the necks into the body of the main bottle on both sides.
When crawling into such a trap, it will not be a problem for the mole to bend the petal, and after the pest reaches the desired target in the main hollow section, the closed neck will not let it out.
Where to place the mole trap
A properly created trap will not guarantee that a mole will fall into it. To obtain the result, the correct installation of the live trap is required.
Preparation and placement of mole traps
It is advisable to bury plastic pipes in newly dug holes. Finding them will not be difficult, since they are located relatively close to the surface of the soil near the dug heaps. Where the mole made its way, the soil loosened in the tunnel will be slightly raised. Installation details can be seen in videos posted on the Internet.
Efficiency of the method
This self-made mole trap, proven in practice, is not inferior to store-bought counterparts. The use of simple, uncomplicated technology will allow you to get rid of the pest, while saving the life of an animal that accidentally entered your territory.
Common errors that prevent the trap from functioning:
- Having chosen an old move for installation, which the mole family has not used for a long time, the live trap will stand idle.
- There should be no dead end on the trap; access must be made only in two directions.
- For reliability, secure the edges with tape or insulating tape.
The effectiveness of live traps is the same as that of traps, and using this method of control, you will not reduce the mole population.
Catch a mole in a jar
Having tried the live trap represented by a pipe, an additional way to protect the crop will be a mole trap-jar. It's much easier to do. The basis can be a bucket, a trimmed five-liter bottle, or a glass jar. The main selection criterion will be open access from above for the animal.
Scheme for catching a mole using a made apparatus:
- Dig a hole at least 25 cm deep.
- You need to dig where there is a fresh passage.
- To prevent the animal from noticing the trick, compact the soil a little near the container placed in the recess.
- It is necessary to cover the top of the trap with thick fabric or wood so that light does not penetrate into the hole.
What to do with a caught animal
When the animal was caught
When installing traps for moles in a vegetable garden or garden plot, they should be checked for the presence of “prey” several times a day, otherwise the animal will simply die from lack of water and food.
Blind animals are not as harmless as people imagine. To protect itself from danger while freeing itself from a live trap, a mole can bite with sharp teeth.
The find should be treated with caution. It is best to take the mole to a remote area in a pipe or jar, and then release it into the wild
There is no guarantee that new individuals of the species will not settle on the site, but there will be no guarantee even if deadly traps are used.
Lethal means
In the fight for territory, you can also resort to the use of pesticides. However, in this case, it will not be possible to exterminate the animals by poisoning the bait due to the fact that moles feed on insects and bugs.
The best option is to use substances and preparations that are distributed in the air space of the soil and act through evaporation.
- Calcium carbide. The use of a solid substance is due to the calcium phosphide and acetylene contained in the composition, the vapors of which are toxic to living beings (including the owner of the site). To achieve the result, you need to place several weighty pieces of carbide in a plastic bottle and pour in water, and place the container itself with the neck inside the underground passage. As a result of a chemical reaction, accompanied by active seething, gas will be released, which will cause significant damage to the health of the animal.
- "Alphos the mole." The principle of operation is approximately the same as in the case of carbide. The product is a tablet with aluminum phosphide. This poison has a destructive effect on both animals and insects. “Alphos mole” is buried in the ground, and when exposed to humidity, toxic gas is released.
- "Detia". A drug intended not to exterminate living creatures, but to repel them. During the use of granules, it is not a poisonous gas that is released, but evaporation of essential oils, the smell of which is unpleasant to moles.
- "STOP-Mole." A specialized product for exterminating earth-moving animals. Presented in the form of tablets that need to be buried in the mink area. It is best to carry out manipulations in the middle of daylight hours when the pest is hibernating.
- Green house ANTICROT. The chemical has a completely different principle of action. Acts as a bait, which contains food elements that enhance the perception of the drug as a source of nutrition. The damaging substance is bromadiolone, which contributes to the deterioration of the blood clotting of an animal or insect. As a result, after a few days the mole rat dies.
Effective control measures
It is important to understand that moles are just animals, they do not intentionally cause harm, so try to use humane methods if possible
Other inhumane, but fairly reliable methods include traps and molebreakers of various models, which are sold in large numbers in stores. They are equipped with a spring and are aimed at directly killing the animal that falls into the trap.
In general, the question of how to catch a mole that has appeared on a site is solved quite simply. Sometimes the fight against animals takes a lot of time, but thanks to humane methods it is possible to protect the crop without harming the animals.
There are many ways to get rid of moles in the garden:
- Sound methods in the form of self-made pinwheels made from plastic bottles will not always help get rid of moles. To effectively influence underground inhabitants, a constant presence of wind is required.
- Ultrasonic repellers, which can be purchased at specialized gardening stores. More effective, they act on moles without the intervention of external factors. Disadvantage - they can act as irritants on humans.
- Aromatic methods. The area is planted with black beans or imperial hazel grouse - the unpleasant smell emitted by the roots of the plants will help get rid of uninvited guests. Also for these purposes, rotten fish, meat, garlic or rags, previously soaked in gasoline, kerosene, or tar, are placed in underground passages.
- The usual barriers are in the form of underground fences that prevent the animal from further moving.
- Use of poison. To get rid of underground pests, stores offer various poisonous products that emit odors that are pleasant to the mole’s sense of smell. The poison can be mixed independently with crushed dried worms or insects, and the prepared substance can be carefully placed in the place where the animal is supposed to move.
- Dog baiting. In addition to barking, moles cannot tolerate the feeling of danger when they are being hunted.
- You can also get rid of moles using a watering hose, placing it directly in the hole you made. If you first scatter carbide along the length of an underground tunnel, then after the substance comes into contact with water, the effect of a gas chamber is formed. It should be noted that this method involves a long and painful death of the mammal.
- Installed traps and traps will help get rid of moles in the garden. If the first option implies the instant death of an underground inhabitant, then the second is a more humane method and is suitable for those who are wondering how to catch a mole without harming it.
Common Mistakes
There is an opinion that a family of moles can be driven away from the site using products with a pungent odor placed in different places on the land. This is a mistake; small diggers sprinkle soil on the side where the bad smell comes from.
Another common mistake is using noise scares. Completely useless things. Moles happily settle near highways and railways.
Additional tips and tricks
Combinatoriality is important in catching moles. A combination of different types of traps will give maximum results.
8 of the best DIY mole repellents
If you want to catch an animal alive and unharmed, it is extremely important to use hard gloves when working. They bite hard. It's painful and unsafe. It is better for the catcher to take his trophy away from home, at a distance of at least two km. In this case, he will not find his old moves.
Fact! Moles have 44 teeth, plus fangs. This is a predator. Not only worms and insects are eaten. Small mice and even sick relatives will be eaten for breakfast. The mole is a cruel animal, stocking up for the winter and may well harm small rodents, but not kill them. Leaving them to breathe. And when he is hungry, he will eat them.
If there are a lot of moles in the region, then it makes sense to spend time and money, but solve the problem radically:
- Dig a lawn net throughout the area. To do this, remove about 15 cm of soil around the entire perimeter, lay a mesh and then return the soil.
- A similar preventative method, but the mesh is dug in around the perimeter to a depth of up to a meter deep and about 30 cm of mesh should remain on top of the ground.
- As an option, trenches are dug around the perimeter, which are concreted or filled with coarse gravel, parts of bricks, and crushed stone.
In any bad news there can be good moments. Experts say that moles are picky and will not settle on infertile land. So, if “guests” appear at the dacha, it means that the earth is full of vitamins and minerals. All that remains is to send out the uninvited comrades and start planting seeds for the future harvest.
A little about the pest
The mole himself, to be honest, could become a real gardener's friend, if not for his passion for digging under fertile beds. After all, this is an insectivorous animal, that is, the animal does not feed on potatoes, beets or carrots, no.
In terms of nutrition, the mole leads an exclusively predatory lifestyle. This is a merciless hunter of almost all types of insects, their larvae and all kinds of worms that the animal can find in the soil. This underground glutton is capable of consuming almost 2 times more organic food per day than it weighs.
Thus, someone may have a question, they say, if a mole destroys all sorts of underground rubbish, and at the same time loosens the earth, supplying it with oxygen, why is such a useful animal recorded as a pest.
The answer lies on the surface. Every gardener knows perfectly well how destructive the appearance of such a digger in the garden can be both for the appearance of his plot and for the harvest itself.
Firstly, this animal significantly spoils the appearance of the site, leaving many molehills on its surface. This is a necessity for the mole, because the animal must put somewhere the earth that turned out to be superfluous when laying the next round of the underground system of passages.
And most importantly, the animal is capable of causing serious damage to your gardening, spoiling many plants and harvest items. This is all due to the need of this soil animal to constantly expand its underground boundaries by digging and creating many intertwined passages and highways for movement.
While making its passages, the animal involuntarily touches the root systems of plants, including tubers and root vegetables, such as carrots, potatoes and beets.
This digger also spoils the roots and crops in the process of hunting and feeding, often grabbing a little of the plant itself along with the earthworm that has settled in the plant’s root system.
That is why gardeners do not like these funny animals so much, and, having learned about the appearance of a mole on the site, they immediately take all possible measures to eliminate the problem.
Features of mole hunting
Only a madman or someone who has no idea what this activity is like would go after this animal with a gun. It may seem to a novice hunter that hunting moles is a pointless and boring undertaking, but this is far from the case. If you taste all the delights of mole hunting just once, you will be captivated by this activity forever and will recommend it to all your friends and acquaintances. Perhaps if every skeptic tried this “strange” activity at least once, his opinion about mole catchers would change significantly.
Material dividends are not all that hunting animals can bring. From an emotional point of view, this type of hunting will allow a new look at nature even for those individuals who “see” it quite rarely. As a rule, moles begin to be hunted when the fields bloom with different colors, the smell of black currants is fragrant in the air, and young mushrooms begin to attract with their recognizable caps. This is the time when the aroma of freshly cut hay and meadowsweet is in the air.
However, despite all the above-mentioned romance, catching moles will not be easy. Like any other craft, this activity requires great dexterity and certain skills. It is worth knowing a lot about the biology of the animal, especially where exactly it lives.
Choosing a location for the trap
During the hot season, it is best to catch moles along ditches and streams, as well as on trails used by people and livestock for travel. In such places the soil is not so hot, so moles will be found here most often. During the rainy season, it is best to place mole traps directly on the surface, where the prey will crawl out of the water-filled holes.
Permanent and feeding passages are quite often located in close proximity to each other, forming a complex interweaving between them. In order to determine the type of burrows, do not hesitate to dig up the ground and examine them from the inside. If you find a feeding ground, then be sure that there will be a permanent passage nearby. Remember that setting traps in feeding holes is a waste of time.
