Moles in the country - how to get rid of them using folk remedies

Summer residents face many problems. Plantings are constantly attacked by various pests: aphids, mole crickets, midges, Colorado potato beetles and other insects. But if moles appear on the site, then the situation becomes critical.

These underground animals do not feed on fruits, but quickly destroy the root system. As a result, there is no point in talking about any harvest. If you have moles in your dacha, then you need to get rid of them as quickly as possible. To do this, we will use folk remedies and methods.

If only one underground animal appears on a summer cottage, then measures must be taken promptly, since relatives will soon appear. And then there will be no time for rest and harvesting on the plot.

You can get rid of moles using traps and chemicals, but we will use simple folk methods.

How to get rid of moles in a summer cottage using validol

The presence of small mammals in the garden makes you nervous. It’s time to at least drink validol. But these tablets can be successfully used to hatch animals.

The essence of the method is quite simple. You need to identify all the burrows of insectivorous animals. Place one validol tablet in each shelter. They don't like the smell of the pharmaceutical drug and leave the area.

Finding mole housing is not difficult. When we find a loosened mound of earth, we clean it, dig a little and leave the validol. Within a few days, you will no longer see traces of mole activity.

How can you catch a mole?

How to catch a mole? This is a question for which most gardeners and gardeners have to look for an answer. Moles are pests that cause a lot of trouble and cause damage to cultivated plants.

Methods for catching moles:

  1. Call representatives of the appropriate service. They will set up mole traps and, if necessary, use smoke bombs or poisons. Many gardeners find it difficult to call special services, because an invitation to a remote site can cost a pretty penny. These experts cannot give guarantees that blind pests will not return to the garden next season.
  2. Buy ultrasonic repellers in specialized stores. The moles may leave, but as soon as the device stops working, they will return.
  3. Use industrial mole traps to catch moles. They are expensive and can be difficult to find on sale. They cannot guarantee complete extermination. The result is the same as mole traps made with your own hands from improvised materials.

We remove animals with smoke

To smoke out blind animals we will need:

  • Needles;
  • Pipe;
  • Compressor.

We fill the hollow tube with dry pine needles, set it on fire and insert it into the hole at one end. To increase the intensity of the smoke, connect the compressor. How to implement such an idea, see the video below:

When blind people feel danger, they immediately leave their habitat. In the area with moles there are a large number of underground passages that connect all the burrows. It is enough to find one shelter and smoke out the uninvited guests.

Electronic repeller Green Belt Antikrot

As you know, moles have extremely poor vision, which is compensated by the sensitivity of other organs. This can be used to create conditions under which underground rodents will be forced to leave your territory. An electrical device operates on this principle, generating powerful ultrasonic waves at certain intervals. As a rule, a few days of its operation are enough for the moles to find another place for permanent residence.

The Russian-made device demonstrates high efficiency in a short period of time. All its components were created in Russia.

It consumes a minimum of energy, which allows it to be used continuously without replacing the battery for 4-6 months, depending on climatic conditions.

Peculiarities:

  • operating voltage – 9 volts, ensures safe use without any risk;
  • power is provided by a KRONA battery of appropriate power;
  • covers an area of 17-20 m around itself.

Green Belt Antikrot was created using technology that does not require certification, but this does not mean that its quality will be low. However, be aware that some pets may be sensitive to high-frequency sound, causing them to become anxious and react violently.

Getting rid of moles using an alarm clock

Underground animals are blind, but have an excellent sense of smell and hearing. We will use this to drive them out of the summer cottage. To do this, we need two regular alarm clocks, which can be bought at any hardware store.

On one clock we set the signal time to 06:00, and on the second - 00:00. Place alarm clocks in glass jars and close with lids.

In opposite places of the land we dig two holes, 20 cm deep. We bury the clock in them.

Sound signals disturb the usual peace of the animals, and they will quickly leave not only your dacha, but also neighboring areas. The batteries will last a long time, so the pests will not return to you for a long time.

Live traps

When making such mole traps with your own hands, only one quality is required: the absence of fear of moles. The most popular trap among people is made from a plastic water pipe.

Live trap pipe

Why the name “Solomon’s trap” was attached to this pipe is a mystery. But it's not difficult to make. For production you will need:

  • water pipe;
  • tin can with both bottoms;
  • a piece of wire;
  • drill;
  • metal scissors or that you don’t mind getting dull.

The diameter of the pipe must be exactly the size of the wormhole. Usually it is about 6 cm.

How to make:

  1. Cut a piece about 50 cm long from the pipe. Drill 2 holes on both sides of the piece, on the side that will be the top. The holes are needed to secure the wire.
  2. Cut the bottoms out of a tin can.
  3. The height of the door should be greater than the diameter of the pipe, since it is installed with an inward slope. This is shown in the side view diagram. To secure the door to the wire, you also need some allowance. Accordingly, the door height will not be 60 mm, but 70-80 mm. The width of the door is cut slightly narrower than the diameter of the pipe.
  4. Bend the top edge of the door around the wire.
  5. Then remove the wire and assemble the entire structure, sequentially threading the wire into the hole in the pipe, the mount on the door and the second hole in the pipe.
  6. Bend the outer ends of the wire so that the door does not break at the wrong moment.

To install the pipe, you need to open the mole tunnel and replace the tunnel dug by the animal with your own from the pipe. Open the passage carefully to cause the least amount of damage and not to frighten the animal. It is better to do this with a garden trowel.

The pipe is installed in progress. From above, so that the sun does not illuminate the tunnel, cover the trap with a piece of dense material and cover it with earth.

Plastic bottles

Bottle trap
A very quick and cheap way to make an analogue of Solomon's trap. A bottle trap is built on the principle of a fish trap.

To make a mole trap from a plastic bottle, you will need 2 or 3 disposable containers of 1.5 liters each. For a one-sided version you need 2 bottles, for a double-sided one - 3. In the one-sided version, the bottom of the main bottle is left in place. These are all differences, so you need to consider a double-sided option.

  1. The “body” of the pipe is made from one bottle by cutting off the top and bottom.
  2. From the other two you need the upper parts, cut off well below the beginning of the narrowing towards the neck.
  3. The neck itself is also cut off.
  4. In the remaining part, ribbons are cut on the tapering part up to the expanding part. After which the finished parts are tightly driven into the main bottle, as shown in the diagram.
  5. The wormhole is installed in the same way as a pipe. The plastic is slippery and there is no need to secure the inserted parts. The animal, crawling along the way, will easily spread the “ribbons” and fall into the trap. He won't be able to get back.

Trap pits

Trap pits
To do this, you will need a 3-liter jar with a neck wide enough so that you can remove a mole clutched in your fist. The jar is buried below the mole tunnel so that its neck is level with the tunnel floor. You need to dig the hole carefully so as not to collapse the passage. The jar is placed at the bottom of the hole and sprinkled so that there are no holes left between the actual hole and the neck of the jar. The passage is covered with plywood from above.

The advantage of live traps is that the animals that are very useful in nature have a chance to survive. The disadvantages are the need for frequent checks and problems with release into the wild. The mole must be taken far from the site, otherwise it will return. But you can also kill an animal, but you will have to do it manually.

The disadvantage of a trapping pit jar is that you have to get the animals out of it by hand so as not to spoil a well-made trap. But if they manage to die of hunger, there will be no problems removing them from the jar.

How to fight moles in the country with gas (easy way)

Blind animals do not like extraneous noises or unpleasant odors. If you have a car, then in a few minutes you can drive away small animals from your dacha.

We will need a hose and fittings for mounting. We fix one end on the exhaust pipe, and insert the other into the blind man's hole. Now all you have to do is turn on the machine and wait for the small mammals to start panicking and run away.

Moles do not live in places where they feel discomfort. Therefore, it is necessary to create unfavorable conditions.

How to make reliable mole traps with your own hands

Most people who do not have their own summer cottages have an idea of moles from old Hungarian cartoons: a fluffy little mole, blind, doing good deeds. Few people have seen them live, so many people think this animal looks like a large mouse. But that's not true. Moles literally destroy the landscape with their underground construction activities. They destroy the earthen structure by eating beneficial worms and insects, so catching a mole is the dream of every avid gardener.

How to get rid of blind people in your garden using a bottle

We continue to take advantage of the high hearing sensitivity of animals. You can make a device with your own hands from an ordinary plastic bottle that will repel moles.

Using a drill, drill a hole at the bottom of the bottle. Then we make side cuts with a sharp knife, then bend the blades.

Similarly, we will prepare several devices to scare away blind animals.

We string the prepared device from a bottle onto a metal rod and install it on a plot of land.

Even a slight breeze will cause the bottle to move, which will make extraneous sounds. This method is one of the simplest.

Types of ready-made traps

There are quite a few ready-made mole traps, for example: scissor traps, tunnel traps, plunger traps, pipe mole traps (also called humane traps) or live traps, ultrasonic repellers. Let's look at each trap in detail.

Scissor trap

There are many options for such devices, which are most often found in gardening stores, etc.

The photo shows a simple example of a scissor trap

Advantages:

  • Easy to install (just press the handles into the ground and cock the mechanism).
  • You can observe the operation from a distance.
  • It is easy to adjust the sensitivity of the device.
  • Simple but reliable design.

Flaws:

  • Although easy to use, the trap is difficult to install in a tunnel opening, especially at great depths. It must be located and hidden so that the moving parts are not obstructed in the form of stones, pieces of peat, or clods of earth. Due to the tight handles, it is difficult to completely hide the device without light entering the passage, ensuring reliable operation.
  • If there are low temperatures in the ground, the handles freeze and the trap does not work.
  • Heavy rain can wash away the soil, making the trap undetectable.
  • Difficult to install in very shallow and very deep tunnels.

Tunnel trap

The most suitable design for a mole trap is one that includes a semi-tunnel. Such a trap is easy to hide; working parts for the most part do not jam from foreign objects.

Advantages:

  • Easy to install in a mole passage. It is enough to pour a little earth on top to block the access of light.
  • Quickly and effectively kills pests.
  • It is easy to adjust the sensitivity of the mechanism.
  • Working parts practically do not jam due to the ingress of stones, peat, etc.
  • If you cover the trap with peat or a board, frost and rain will not affect its operation.
  • It is used with equal success in deep and shallow tunnels.
  • Can neutralize two moles at the same time.

Flaws:

  • Complex installation, requires advance instructions. If used incorrectly, you can easily get hurt.
  • The operation of the device cannot be seen from afar.
  • Invisible above the ground, so if the pointer is lost, the trap will be difficult to find.

Plunger trap

If you prefer to use a scissor trap, then this effective device is worth a try.

This is what a plunger trap looks like Another version of a plunger trap

Advantages:

  • The trigger mechanism is triggered in a different way from the previous two types. The trap is activated not by the movement of the mole with its nose or paws, but by pushing through the earth to restore the previously dug tunnel. Thus, the trap is very useful in the presence of moles that bypass the traps.
  • A very powerful trap that requires a little practice to use.
  • No need to adjust before use.
  • Relatively easy to install, but requires a little time, especially when working on rocky soil.

We suggest you familiarize yourself with: Do-it-yourself mosquito and midge repellent

Flaws:

  • If there are stones in the ground, it can become stuck, as is the case with a scissor trap.
  • If you do not have the skills to install it correctly, the device may not work, and moles will freely pass through it.

Quite ineffective devices. The first is a hollow tube with movable doors on both sides, the second also has the shape of a tube that is installed in the soil. According to reviews from gardeners, it is almost impossible to get rid of moles using such traps, because moles bypass some of them, while they get used to others or ignore them altogether.

How to lime animals with rotten herring

Uninvited guests in the garden interfere with planting and harvesting work. One effective method is missing fish.

When salting herring or preparing fish dishes, put the waste in a separate container. Leave them in a closed jar for several days. When they emit a stench, you can begin to get rid of small mammals.

To determine the course, we carefully inspect the land and find a wet and loosened mound. We dig it down to the hole and lay out the nuclear drug.

After this procedure, mole rats will not appear at your dacha for a long time.

Ultrasonic mole repeller Antikrot Maxi Plus

The device works on the same principle as its analogues, but its power has been significantly increased. High-frequency sound is more powerful, which reduces the time during which moles and other rodents leave your territory and no longer dare to appear within its boundaries.

All four devices are highly efficient. The manufacturer guarantees their high quality, and we, in turn, undertake the responsibility to supply our customers with the best equipment to protect their gardens from pests and other threats.

We remove moles in the country using urine

This method is dubious and unpleasant, but some gardeners note its effectiveness. To do this, you need to collect cat urine, soak rags in it and plug holes in the molehill with them.

For the same purposes, you can use gasoline, ammonia or castor oil. The result will be the same. But when several families of underground animals live on the site, it is better to choose more serious measures.

In the article I have collected all the popular methods that help get rid of moles in the country. Choose which one you like best. If you have original and effective methods, then share them with blog readers in the comments.

Lethal traps

Let's move on to the darkest topic, but it would be wrong to ignore it. It is not always possible to expel sometimes annoying moles from the site with kindness.

In this case, in order to save the harvest and the appearance of the garden, it is necessary to resort to radical methods of physically exterminating these pests in the summer cottage.

Noose trap

Such a device for capturing and killing an animal can either be purchased in a special store or constructed with your own hands. Typically, such a trap is a wire loop, the method of action of which is to ensure that an animal caught in a deadly funnel cannot escape alive.

Such a trap is installed horizontally in the hole, after which the mole passage is dug in. Once caught in such a loop, the animal usually suffocates or dies from the body being crushed.

Mole masher

The use of shock-pressure traps helps to ensure the destruction of moles on the site quite reliably. In fact, these are ordinary mousetraps, like those installed in the kitchen or in the barn against rodents.

Scat 61 and 62

Models of plunger traps are very cruel in their operating principle, which invariably kill the animal.

The first model works on the principle of a crossbow. That is, by tearing off the leash, the animal releases the spring, which, when lowered, activates several spokes that pierce the mole at once.

The second model is no less scary and destructive for the animal. It works like an ordinary toothed trap for a forest animal, only the purpose of such a device is not to catch the animal by the limb, but to kill a small digger with one blow.

Another product that kills moles, this time from a Swiss manufacturer. This mole-killing mechanism is reminiscent of the same Skat models, only the murder weapon here is not pins, but a serrated vertically lowering plate that acts like a guillotine.

Until now, we have talked exclusively about mechanical traps for moles, but we almost forgot about the existence of mole traps that kill underground animals using an electric discharge.

This is a fairly effective way of exterminating moles on a site, which, however, is not cheap and requires time spent on installing such a serious electrical protection system, with a constant source of electricity.

Typically, such electrical systems are used by entrepreneurial farmers, since equipping an ordinary summer cottage with a network of electric mole-cutters is neither financially justified nor profitable.

Features of moles

Before you start fighting moles, you should study their habits. The knowledge gained will help you better understand them and find the most effective ways to counteract them. According to the observations of zoologists, moles have the following specific features:

  • Moles live in families. If you find one of them on your property, you can be sure that several more have most likely taken up residence nearby;
  • hibernation. In winter, worms and insects, the usual food for moles, disappear, so moles also go to winter. To do this, they build small mounds, which can be easily identified by piles of loose earth, clearly visible from afar;
  • They make passages underground at shallow depths. This is where larvae, bugs and worms live. The tunnels themselves can reach a length of 100 cm;
  • great strength and speed. People, as a rule, see these pests already in a neutralized state - in traps or in their hands. However, it is not recommended to catch them without protective gloves - they can easily wriggle out and bite a person’s fingers;
  • poor vision and strong sense of smell. Their eyes are small, but moles are not deprived of vision. For balance, they were naturally given excellent hearing and sense of smell;
  • mental capacity. These animals are able to remember their mistakes and not make them again; they also easily adapt to rapidly changing circumstances.

As you can see, fighting moles is much more difficult than fighting insects, so the home owner must take into account everything that can help him in this confrontation.

How to protect the area from repeated penetration of moles

Catching moles is usually not an easy task. Therefore, even if you win the first stage of the war with earth-moving animals, you need to take care of the subsequent protection of the site from repeated invasion.

This is interesting: moles rarely live alone. In most cases, a whole family is located on the site, which can reach several dozen in number.

To prevent the appearance of individuals, you should adhere to a number of recommendations:

  • Stretch a metal or plastic mesh along the entire perimeter of the site so that it protrudes above the ground by 20 cm and is submerged by 70. You can also use slate, PVC or polycarbonate as a barrier structure using the same principle.
  • A shallow ditch dug out and filled with crushed stone along the fence line helps protect the territory quite well.
  • A more expensive option is to build a concrete foundation and then install a fence on it.
  • A lawn net, which is laid 10 cm deep under the turf, will help protect the area.

Whatever method you choose to defend your territory, do not forget about humanity. Despite the considerable damage these animals cause to the garden, they also have the right to exist.

Repeller made from plastic bottles

If the owners decide to make a repellent device themselves, then it is advisable to use ready-made diagrams that describe such designs in detail. So how to make a grotto and rodent repeller with your own hands?

First you need to take empty plastic bottles, several sticks or hollow tubes about one and a half meters long. Then you need to take a sharp knife or blade and cut holes in the body of the plastic bottles so that after the cuts you can pull out the plastic blades. They are pulled out and bent in different directions to let more air into the bottle. Then you need to drill a hole in the bottom. A pin or hollow tube will be inserted into this hole. Thus, according to this scheme, we will get a pin with a bottle attached, which looks like a feeder. The lower part of the pin plunges 30 centimeters into the ground.

Visually, such a repeller is not very aesthetic, so it can be painted in bright colors. Of course, this will not improve efficiency. This mole repeller scheme is the simplest.

A more powerful analogue will not be a feeder, but a propeller. The propeller will rotate like a windmill under the influence of the wind. When placing 3-4 plastic bottles on it, it will make much more noise, and moles will not come into your area.

You need to make 2-3 holes in the walls of the bottle and insert light, wide plastic parts into them to make a primitive propeller. Then make a hole in the bottle cap with a nail and attach it to the pin. The mechanism of action is the same as in the first case.

Such repellers operate on the principle of a wind generator. In the design, air currents create a lot of noise, which will transmit vibration vibrations into the ground through a hollow tube or pin.
