Bars drops for cats and dogs - instructions for use

Description of the drug

Today, the market offers a wide range of domestic products of various types under the Bars brand; they are designed to destroy various types of parasites and protect pets from them.
Among a large number of diverse products, there are drops to combat fleas and ticks; they are in great demand and consistently confirm their high level of effectiveness. Bars drops can be used both as a means to completely get rid of existing parasites, and as a drug for taking preventive measures to minimize the likelihood of insects appearing in pets.

Externally, the drug is a liquid with an oily structure and a specific yellow tint. Sold in bottles with a volume of 1 or 1.4 ml, the container is equipped with a special pipette that facilitates the use of this antiparasitic agent.

This product is intended for cats and dogs and is equally safe and effective for both types of pets. You can purchase the drug in pharmacies or specialized stores that sell products for pets.

Compound

The composition of the drug allows it to be classified as a substance of the third degree of danger, that is, considered a low-toxic product that, when used correctly, does not pose a threat to the life and health of animals or people. The main components responsible for high efficiency and safety are:

  1. Permethrin is the main active ingredient present in the old release drops. In addition to this drug, it is also used as an additive in many household chemicals; its harmful effects on various insects have been known for a very long time. Despite its toxicity, permethrin has a unique property - it is a deadly threat to fleas and ticks, but is safe for warm-blooded animals, which are completely immune to it when used correctly.
  2. Fipronil , a synthetic insecticide, has replaced permethrin in all new drops. It is less toxic, but at the same time it also effectively destroys any type of insects; this component has long been used by specialists in agriculture and veterinary medicine due to its high-quality insectoacaricidal effect. Cats are more sensitive to this substance than dogs, but despite this, it is virtually harmless to all types of animals. Side effects or allergic reactions occur only in rare and exceptional cases; fipronil cannot cause severe poisoning.
  3. A number of auxiliary components that repel insects . These include various types of natural essential oils.

Efficiency and effect of the drug

The principle of action of Bars drops is the following processes that begin to occur after treating the animal with this drug:

  1. After rubbing the product, it is absorbed into the skin, the main accumulation occurs in the hair follicles or sebaceous glands. In this case, the drug itself does not enter the pet’s blood.
  2. At the moment when the parasites become active and begin to bite a cat or dog, the release of active substances begins, which gradually collects on the surface of the skin.
  3. The poisonous substance enters the insect's body through the chitinous cover.
  4. After poisoning with an insecticide, a malfunction occurs in the nervous system of the parasite, resulting in complete paralysis and the inability to feed, which leads to the death of the pest.

However, they noted that the use of both drugs leads to a positive result, which consists of complete elimination of fleas and ticks without side effects.

Instructions for use

Despite the relative safety of the active ingredients that make up the drops, they must be used strictly in accordance with the instructions, moreover, the drug is available in such a form that this will not be difficult at all. When using the product, you must adhere to the following algorithm of actions:

  1. Choose the type of drops that are suitable for a particular animal, depending on its type, condition and age.
  2. The drops are already poured into a special dropper-pipette; all that remains is to apply them to the animal’s fur. It is best to treat the withers area, since cats and dogs have difficult access to this area, and therefore will not have the opportunity to lick or wipe the product off their body.
  3. After applying the liquid to the fur, it will need to be rubbed in thoroughly.
  4. Treatment with drops is allowed no more than once a month to prevent an overdose of toxic substances.
  5. Isolate your pet from other animals so that they also do not have the opportunity to lick drops from its fur.

In this case, the choice of dosage depends on the type of animal, as well as on its weight; detailed instructions for this process are given below:

  1. Cats weighing less than 1 kg only need to apply 10 drops from the built-in pipette.
  2. For cats that weigh 1–2 kg, the single dosage is doubled and is about 15–20 drops.
  3. For cats that weigh 3 kg or more, the entire volume of the substance in the pipette should be rubbed in at one time.
  4. Small breeds of dogs weighing 2–3 kg need to apply no more than 20 drops of the substance.
  5. Dogs that weigh between 3 and 10 kg are required to rub in the entire volume of the substance from a pipette.
  6. For larger dog breeds that weigh 10–20 kg, the dosage is increased to two full droppers.
  7. For the largest dogs weighing 20 kg and above, it is allowed to rub in all 3-4 pipettes of the drug, which are included in one box, at a time.

Ingredients for flea and tick treatment

The drops contain three active ingredients:

  • Fipronil kills adults. The substance blocks gamma-aminobutyric acid in cell membranes, disrupts neural connections, which leads to damage to the central nervous system of bloodsuckers.
  • Diflubenzuron exterminates parasites at transitional stages of development: it suppresses the formation of chitin, prevents the maturation of larvae from eggs, which leads to a reduction in the population of bloodsuckers.
  • Dicarboximide enhances the toxic properties of insecticides and interferes with the formation of protective enzymes in insects.

The composition includes auxiliary components: isopropyl alcohol, polyethylene glycol, polyvinylpyrrolidone. The drops are produced in the form of a transparent, yellowish oily solution, poured into bottles or pipettes with a volume of 0.3 to 5 ml, and packaged in boxes of 3 to 7 pieces.

Contraindications

Bars drops are effective and at the same time quite safe for pets against fleas and ticks, but they still have a number of contraindications for which their use is strictly prohibited:

  1. If the animal has not yet reached ten weeks of age, then treatment with drops, even those intended directly for kittens and puppies, is not allowed.
  2. Pregnancy or lactation period. In some cases, the use of drops is allowed, but prior consultation and obtaining appropriate permission from a veterinarian is required.
  3. Combined use with other antiparasitic drugs is also unacceptable, since there is a risk of overdose of insecticides, as well as incompatibility of the components of various drugs with each other.
  4. Hypersensitivity, allergic reaction or individual intolerance to these drops and their individual components. If any side effects are noticed, the pet must be subjected to water procedures using shampoo; consultation with a specialist is advisable.
  5. Dogs whose body weight is below 2 kg cannot be treated with these drops; they will need to choose other means of protection against parasites.
  6. If the animal is suffering from infectious diseases or is undergoing a rehabilitation period after an illness and the pet has not yet had time to fully regain its strength, then the use of drops will need to wait until complete recovery.

Collars

Leopard collars are an excellent solution in the fight against parasites for those who, for some reason, do not have the opportunity to use drops or spray. This product is excellent against both fleas and ixodid ticks. The latter can sometimes stick, but within a day they fall off on their own.

The advantage of using a collar is its longer action compared to other drugs. So, while the effect of drops and aerosols is limited to a maximum of two months, the duration of use of the collar is up to four months.

The disadvantage of this means of protection against fleas and ticks is that some pets are dissatisfied with the constant presence of a collar on their neck. Often in the first days they constantly try to remove it and become more nervous. Sometimes they still manage to remove it or even lose it (the latter is especially typical for cats living in private homes). According to some veterinarians, collars can negatively affect the health of pets.

In most cases, the collar does not affect the well-being of the animals, but occasionally individual intolerance to the main active ingredient – fipronil – occurs. In such situations, it is recommended to stop using the collar and other drugs based on it, choosing an appropriate analogue.

Before using the collar, it is often recommended to bathe pets with shampoo, also designed to remove parasites. These actions help enhance the effect of the collar and reduce the time of getting rid of existing parasites.

Personal prevention measures

It must be remembered that careless handling of drops can harm not only animals, but also people. Therefore, it is necessary to adhere to and not forget about the following preventive measures:

  1. It is recommended to handle animal fur using protective disposable gloves.
  2. Simultaneous eating, drinking any drinks or smoking is not allowed, as these processes can lead to the entry of a toxic substance into the digestive system and subsequent poisoning.
  3. After completing the treatment of the animal, you must wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
  4. It is forbidden to pet animals for 24 hours after treatment.
  5. It is better to limit the pet’s contact and communication with children for several days after the treatment.
  6. If the drug gets on the skin, the area must be washed with soap. If drops get on the mucous membranes, then the most thorough rinsing and disinfection is required.
  7. The droppers remaining after applying the product are prohibited from further use for any purposes; they must be disposed of.
  8. It is forbidden to use drops, even if they are slightly expired, as they can be harmful to the animal.
  9. Storage must be carried out in a secluded and dark place.

Reviews

Since Bars brand drugs have been on the market for quite a long time and have repeatedly confirmed their high effectiveness, many people who have been faced with the issue of removing fleas and ticks from their pets have already tried them. Now they are ready to share their experience of using such an antiparasitic agent, some opinions about it are given below:

  1. Nikolay: “Bars helped me a lot in ridding my cats of subcutaneous mites; before that I used other drugs, including more expensive ones, but there was no result. At first I was afraid to use it, so first I applied a small amount to all cats and looked at the reaction; within 24 hours no allergies or side effects appeared. After that, I carried out a full treatment in accordance with the instructions, my pets tolerated it quite well.”
  2. Marina: “I heard a lot of negative reviews, but after the first use Bars showed very good results. I recommended it to my neighbor; her cats also tolerated the treatment process well. A total of seven cats were treated and none had an allergic reaction. But it is necessary to take into account that animals are treated with insecticides, and there is always a certain risk of getting a bunch of side effects if the cat has an individual intolerance. The main thing is to isolate the animals from each other, since they can lick the poison from each other if they continue to be in active contact.”
  3. Alexander: “I treat Spitz, Chow Chow and German Shepherd with Bars, it has the same positive effect on everyone. Before this, I couldn’t find a suitable remedy for a long time: I had an acute allergy to some, and after using others I had to administer an antidote. These drops were recommended by a neighbor who often goes hunting with his dogs, from where they bring all sorts of parasites. By the way, the price of Bars is much lower than that of those products that I chose on my own and which in the end did not work. Therefore, as they say, all that glitters is not gold.”
  4. Ivan: “At first I used other means, but they failed too often and I began to find parasites in the dog even after treatment, so I gradually switched to Bars. I am very pleased that, unlike most other drip products, it does not have the typical chemical smell. For a very long time there were no complaints about this drug, but recently I noticed that it has become ineffective against ticks; perhaps these parasites have adapted to the product, since it still effectively exterminates fleas. Apparently, in the near future we will have to again select a new drug that will protect against all types of parasites.”

Bars drops against fleas and ticks for cats (3 pipettes)

Composition and pharmacological properties

Drops are classified as insectoacaricidal agents.
They contain fipronil as an active ingredient, as well as excipients. Fipronil, which is part of the drug, has a pronounced contact insectoacaricidal effect on the larval and mature phases of development of fleas, lice, lice, ixodid and sarcoptic ticks that parasitize dogs and cats. After cutaneous application of the drug, fipronil, without being absorbed into the systemic bloodstream, accumulates in the epidermis, hair follicles and sebaceous glands of the animal’s body and has a long-term contact insectoacaricidal and repellent effect.

The mechanism of action of fipronil is to block GABA-dependent ectoparasite receptors, disrupting the transmission of nerve impulses, which leads to paralysis and death of insects and ticks.

Indications for use

Prescribed to dogs and cats from 10 weeks of age for entomoses (lice, fleas, lice), sarcoptic mange, notoedrosis, otoedectosis, ixodid ticks, as well as to prevent attacks of ectoparasites on animals.

Contraindications

Individual hypersensitivity of the animal to the components of the drug (including a history of fipronil). The drug should not be used by pregnant, lactating, patients with infectious diseases or convalescent animals, puppies and kittens under 10 weeks of age.

Side effects

Side effects and complications when using the drug in accordance with the instructions, as a rule, are not observed. If there is increased individual sensitivity to the active components of the drug and allergic reactions occur, it should be washed off with soap and water and the animal should be prescribed antihistamines and symptomatic medications.
