Using the popular drug Apache for the Colorado potato beetle. Description of the insecticide and effectiveness. How does it affect pests? Terms of use. On what plants and against what pests is it used? Tips for use. Reviews.

Gardeners are very familiar with this problem - the constant fight against pests that can cause enormous harm and significantly reduce productivity. One of the pests that causes us a lot of trouble is, of course, the Colorado potato beetle. This striped and very voracious pest can completely destroy potato plantings and leave the owners without a harvest.

Today, there is a wide range of insecticides that are aimed at controlling pests; one of the new generation of drugs is Apache for the Colorado potato beetle, which is characterized by rapid action and effectiveness. Let's look at it in more detail, learn about the advantages, features and get acquainted with the rules of use.

Release form and composition

This drug first appeared on the market in our country in 2008 and has since earned the trust of customers as a reliable and effective remedy. This development belongs to the Japanese company Sumitomo.

The drug is produced in the form of granules that are beige in color. When preparing the working solution, the granules dissolve very quickly and completely in water. The preparation does not contain small particles and dust, which greatly simplifies working with it. It is toxic and has a hazard class of 3, so safety precautions must be followed when working.

The main active substance is clothianidin. One kilogram of granules contains 500 g of active ingredient.

This substance belongs to nicotinoids, which provide the following benefits:

  • The accumulation of the active substance occurs in the plant tissues of the plant.
  • Penetrate into the tissues of pests.
  • Do not penetrate human and animal tissues.
  • Decomposition in the soil occurs in a short period of time.
  • Refers to non-volatile substances.
  • To obtain maximum results, a small amount of product is needed.

The product is packaged in packages of different sizes, which is very convenient when choosing to process plantings of different sizes. For the smallest areas, you can purchase a 2.5 g package. This package contains 5 sachets of 0.5 g each.

These are water-soluble bags with granules, which, when preparing a working solution, dissolve themselves in water, which is very convenient. To treat large plantings, you can purchase the product in 250 g plastic bottles.

Disadvantages of the Apache product

It is prohibited to use the pesticide near apiaries, as it is extremely destructive to bumblebees and bees (toxicity class 1). Also toxic against pets.

Some summer residents also include its cost as a disadvantage of Apache, but it, like all systemic agents, is quite expensive.

The working solution must be used within 3 hours and is not intended for storage.

Do not work with the drug in sunny weather:

  • possible burns on the leaves;
  • the powder and the active substance from its composition are destroyed under the influence of direct ultraviolet radiation and lose their insecticidal properties;
  • evaporation of the working solution can occur before it penetrates into the potato tissue;
  • Spraying should be done at least an hour before possible rain.

We must not forget about the hazard class of the drug “Apache” (class 3). To avoid poisoning, you should wear gloves and protect your respiratory system with a respirator.

“The good thing about Apache is that it doesn’t get washed away by rain. This year it rained as if ordered, almost every day. And now Apache showed himself at his best. It was possible not to visit the garden for weeks, because the beetles avoided it. And now the time for digging has come. We can say that for early varieties of potatoes one treatment is enough, which cannot be said about other preparations.” Rita

How to properly prepare a working solution

When purchasing the drug, instructions for use are provided, which detail the process of preparing the solution. Consumption rates, proportions and dosages are very important. At a lower concentration, treatment will not bring the desired result, and if the recommended concentration is exceeded, it can harm the plants.

A small package (2.5 g) is enough to treat 10 acres of plantings. For 2 acres, one sachet of 0.5 g is enough. The scheme for preparing the working solution is quite simple, you need to take 10 liters of water and add a bag of 0.5 g granules. Next, the working solution is poured into a sprayer and can be processed. The solution should be prepared before processing so that it is not stored for a long time.

To treat an area of 10 acres, you should prepare the working fluid as follows. First, take 1 liter of water and add 5 packets of 0.5 g each. After opening the granules, the liquid is diluted to its full volume, water is added to 50 liters. For convenience, you can pour the water into 5 buckets in advance, and then add 200 ml of the prepared concentrate to them.

The drug is also used for soil treatment; for this purpose, a more concentrated solution is prepared. For this method, you need to take 10 liters of water and dissolve 2 packets of 0.5 g each in them.

The insecticide is a universal one, as it is suitable for controlling various pests on vegetable and flower crops. It helps get rid of the Colorado potato beetle, aphids, thrips, wireworms, and whiteflies.

Efficiency and analogues

Apache for the Colorado potato beetle is popular in household and agricultural use due to its effectiveness. Its protective properties last for a month after application. If you treat potatoes with this substance in a timely manner, you can get rid of the voracious Colorado potato beetle for a long time and increase productivity.

The Apache remedy is expensive, so not all owners of summer cottages can afford to treat their plants with this poison. Instead, you can use a number of analogues that are more accessible than the Japanese drug, but no less effective.

Mechanism of action

The drug belongs to a new generation of insecticides and has a triple effect on pests. The active substance acts by contact, intestinal and systemic mechanisms of action.

After spraying the bushes, the active substance penetrates the plant tissue. For 30 days after spraying, the insecticide will be in the leaves, stem, and sap of the plant. When eating leaves, a toxic substance will enter the pest’s intestines, which will lead to their death.

In addition, when the substance comes into contact with beetles and larvae, the poison will penetrate into the body and within half an hour it will die. Young shoots of the plant that appear after treatment also contain a toxic substance and are fatal to the pest.

How to properly dilute and use the drug Apache for the Colorado potato beetle?

To protect potatoes from the harmful effects of dangerous insects using a solution prepared based on a Japanese remedy, it is necessary to spray the tops and stems, and also treat the soil. The active substances of the compound, which is poisonous to insects, work in three directions - intestinal, contact and translaminar.

The effects of intestinal exposure are observed several hours after insects ingest the treated leaves.

The consequences of contact exposure are visible within half an hour after drops of the solution hit the beetles.

The essence of the translaminar effect is that clothianin enters the stem and tops of the potato and remains there for a month, making the plant poisonous to insects.

Rules of application

You cannot spray bushes in hot weather when the sun is bright. This will not bring results and may even harm the plant. The fact is that the applied liquid will quickly evaporate when exposed to direct sunlight and will not be able to be absorbed in sufficient quantities. In addition, liquid on the leaves under the influence of bright sun will cause burns and this will harm the plant.

Rain also affects efficiency. If it rains immediately after spraying, it will wash the substance off the tops and there will be no result. You need to spray dry bushes so that the liquid is absorbed in the correct amount. The required concentration in the tops is achieved within an hour after treatment, after which time there will be no fear of rain.

If the processing procedure is carried out correctly and the rules are followed, a repeat procedure will not be necessary. The drug does not accumulate in tubers, so it does not pose a danger to crops or people. But the harvest can be harvested a month after the treatment.

Advantages and disadvantages

Gardeners highlight among the main advantages of the Apache product its low toxicity to humans.

Also the advantages of this drug are:

  • speed (death of beetles was noticed within an hour after treatment);
  • During the growing season, it is enough to carry out only 1 treatment;
  • At the same time, the drug protects against thrips, aphids and whiteflies;
  • high economic effect;
  • the product is not addictive to pests and prevents their adaptation;
  • the drug is not washed off by precipitation or watering.

Numerous advantages do not exclude some disadvantages of the Apache, which include:

  • increased degree of danger for bees (this drawback is considered the main one, since if there is an apiary nearby, then using the drug is completely prohibited);
  • high price compared to drugs produced by domestic companies;
  • does not guarantee protection against ticks.

Harm to humans and the environment

All work, starting with the process of preparing the solution, must be carried out in compliance with safety measures. The skin must be completely protected from contact with the substance, so it is better to use a special protective suit, you can wear pants and a long-sleeved jacket and gloves.

Be sure to protect your respiratory tract using a respirator. Since the substance is applied using a sprayer, small particles will be released into the air, so that they do not settle on the mucous membranes of the eyes, protective glasses are used. After the procedure you need to take a shower.

The drug poses a mortal danger to bees, so treatment near apiaries is prohibited. The minimum distance from the cultivated area and apiary must be at least 10 kilometers. During the procedure, there should be no pets in the area so as not to harm their health.

Safety precautions

When working with poison, it is recommended to use a respirator, gloves and a protective suit. Upon completion of work, you need to change clothes and take a shower. Do not allow the presence of pets in the treated area.

Spraying is recommended to be done in the morning or evening hours in calm weather.

Under no circumstances should you eat, drink or smoke while plants are being treated with Apache.

Sergey, 42 years old

I have been using Apaches for several years now in potato plantings; I grow them not only for myself, but also for sale. I spray the bushes before flowering to minimize the appearance of the beetle. I am very pleased with the product, minimal time investment and excellent harvest.

Irina, 35 years old

I am a new gardener and very vaguely understood how to grow crops and fight pests. The first problem we had to face was the Colorado potato beetle, even though we had planted a couple of potato bushes. A neighbor gave Apache a try and was pleased with the result. The second year I used it against aphids, the result was the same, all the pests disappeared.

Advantages and disadvantages of the drug

Apache insecticide has the following advantages:

  • systemically affects Colorado potato beetles;
  • quickly destroys insects that harm the plant;
  • dissolves well in cold water;
  • can be reused, since beetles do not get used to it;
  • treating plants with this insecticide will destroy not only Colorado potato beetles, but also other insects;
  • packaged in sachets that easily dissolve in water along with the drug.

The main disadvantage of the drug is its deadly danger to bees, as well as moderate toxicity to domestic animals. If there are beehives at your summer cottage, and chickens walk around the potato beds, then it is better to refrain from using this chemical.

How to use

Before starting treatment, you need to stock up on a spray bottle or sprayer: it is with their help that the spraying will be uniform and the consumption will be economical.

Next, a solution is prepared from the powder or the contents of ampoules. For a small number of beetles, 1 ampoule of 5 ml per 10 liters of water is sufficient. If the number of beetles is already large, take 2 of the same ampoules for the same amount of water. This is usually enough to process 1 hectare. How to prepare the solution:

  • pour/pour out the Regent into the prepared container;
  • add water;
  • mix everything well;
  • fill the sprayer with the prepared solution;
  • start processing.

The prepared solution must be used immediately, not stored, so the amount of working fluid must first be correctly calculated so that there is no excess left.

For greater effect, the manufacturer advises using Regent against the Colorado potato beetle at + 15-25 C. It is better to do this in the morning or evening (before 10.00 or after 18.00). The weather should be calm and dry. Spraying is not used on wet plants, so it is better to poison the Colorado potato beetle taking into account the weather forecast on the day of treatment. The poison should remain on the leaves for 4-6 hours, so if the weather report promises rain, it is better to reschedule the event for another time.

When processing, you need to pay attention to each bush, without missing a single one. It is necessary to spray both the top and bottom of the bush. Treatment must be carried out no later than 28 days before harvest.

It is better to skip the time when potato flowering is at its peak, and treat the bushes at the very beginning of budding or after flowering (but 28 days before harvest, as already mentioned)

Security measures

Since Regent is moderately toxic to humans and animals, care must be taken when working with it:

  • carry out processing only in protective clothing (clothing covering the body, respirator, glasses, gloves);
  • while working with the Regent, other people and animals should not be nearby;
  • do not drink, eat or smoke when working with the insecticide;
  • after pickling, take a shower, soak clothes for several hours and wash in hot water;
  • Wash the solution container thoroughly;
  • If there is any excess solution left, dispose of it off-site.

Compliance with these measures is very important, and if you ignore them, you can get seriously poisoned
