Smoke bombs against bedbugs: what they are, how to use them, how to protect your own health

Smoke bomb - what is it?

The smoke bomb is a new generation insecticidal development that deals with bedbugs much more effectively than traditional sprays and aerosols. This method of killing parasites came to Russia from Japan and China.

The smoke bomb was created in Japan

Checkers destroy bedbugs by acting on them in a complex manner with the following insecticides:

  • permethrin (has a paralyzing effect);
  • hexachlorane (chlorine-based poison);
  • didecyldimethylammonium bromide (effectively destroys insects, fungi, bacteria and infections);
  • molecular sulfur (promotes the formation of clouds of smoke in large volumes).

IMPORTANT: fourth generation permethrin is called cypermethrin. The bugs have not yet had time to adapt to this acaricidal drug.

Products from different manufacturers

From the assortment of similar products, we can highlight a number of the most common ones: checker Whirlwind, Climate, Quiet Evening, CITY, FAS, Vulcan. Each option contains a certain amount and type of active substance, which allows you to determine where the product can be used (intended purpose and area of the object).

This type of blade is used to process greenhouse facilities, agricultural storage facilities, and farms. The product effectively destroys certain insects: ticks, fleas, lice. Checker Climate represents a group of industrial pest control methods. It is rarely used in everyday life. The package contains 300 g of checkers. This is enough to process a greenhouse or other object with an area of 10-15 cubic meters. m.

Price 300 rub.

This is a sulfur block weighing 300 g. This option is an analogue of the Klimat brand products, however, it is low in cost. The FAS checker is offered at a price of 50 rubles. A distinctive feature is the pungent smell of sulfur.

Active ingredient: permethrin (13%). CITY cone is used for processing cellars, barns, and basements. However, in addition to outbuildings, private housing is treated with this product. Such checkers are used against cockroaches, ants, bedbugs, and woodlice.

The price of the product is no more than 120 rubles.

This is a highly effective product, since 1 package can be used to treat an area of up to 1 thousand cubic meters. m. Such checkers are used against mosquitoes and other blood-sucking insects that live in the natural environment and on the territory of private housing. Price – up to 500 rub.

This is a tobacco product that distributes smoke. It is mainly used in granaries and agricultural areas.

It is a safe product, since using it cannot harm plants or people.

There are no chemicals in the composition. The product destroys various insects that can be found on vegetation: aphids, leaf rollers, spider mites, thrips, whiteflies.

The principle of operation of a smoke bomb

After activating the checker, smoke fills the entire space of the apartment or house. It overtakes bloodsuckers anywhere in the room and penetrates under the chitinous membrane and into the hemolymph. Smoke destroys the nervous system of both young and mature bedbugs, completely paralyzing and causing rapid death.

Smoke from a bomb kills bedbugs, but not eggs

IMPORTANT: not only the smoke itself is destructive for bedbugs, but also the white coating from it, which covers all surfaces in the room with an even, uniform layer. If individual parasites survive and try to run through this plaque, the poison will still penetrate their chitinous shell and lead to paralysis.

How effective are checkers?

Given the high penetrating power of smoke, insect repellents can be effective where it is difficult to treat all the hiding places of parasites with conventional aerosol agents. In greenhouses, it is advisable to use them on loose soil where full cleaning is impossible, for example, in agricultural premises (greenhouses, hotbeds), as well as where it is necessary to process a large area with minimal effort - in warehouses and hangars.

Review

“We saved ourselves from moles and scoops with checkers. Miraculously, we managed to find hexachlorane. In general, it’s an unpleasant thing, it only corrodes the eyes, but it worked effectively. It penetrates into all holes, into the ground - even where ordinary means cannot reach. True, now my wife is complaining that it is toxic, but I hope it will dissipate before the crops are planted and will not cause any harm.”

Ivan, Murom

In residential premises, insecticidal smoke, without effort on the part of the handler, easily penetrates behind baseboards, into furniture crevices, under cabinets and sofas, where it quickly poisons insects. Smoke bombs are very effective against bedbugs and cockroaches, but they are usually less effective at killing ants, since these insects’ nests can often be located outside the apartment.

Review

“If you have a lot of cockroaches in your apartment, I will advise you to use smoke bombs against insects. There is no such hassle with them as with all sorts of Cucarach executioners. There is no need to spread anything anywhere, no need to spray every centimeter. Such checkers are sold in the central market, Chinese, blue, or you can buy them on the Internet. Water is poured into a checker jar, this thing is placed in it and that’s it. The main thing is to quickly escape from the apartment, otherwise this smoke is poisonous. And tell the neighbors not to worry. We used to poison this in my mother’s apartment before the renovation. It was, to put it mildly, a mess. The wallpaper was half torn off, the carpets had not been removed from the walls since the post-war years, and there was a half-meter layer of dust in the closets. When the refrigerator was pulled away from the wall, my wife fell on a chair - there were probably thousands of cockroaches there. They placed two of these checkers, one in the room, one in the kitchen, pickled them - and that was it. True, the smoke came all the way onto the site, but we warned all the neighbors and there were no problems. But later, when the workers were doing repairs, they carried the cockroaches out of the house in buckets.”

Konstantin, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky

It should be remembered that bombs against synanthropic insects for the most part do not destroy bedbug eggs.

This means that when fighting these parasites, treating the room with smoke will have to be repeated twice with an interval of 2-3 weeks or combined with other means.

In addition, the smoke from some bombs has no residual effect and kills insects only within a few hours after the product burns. Practice shows that it is long-acting products that allow you to destroy bedbugs in one treatment.

In cases where bedbugs were destroyed indoors with checkers at one time, pre-treatment with other insecticides usually took place. Very often, apartment residents try to poison bedbugs with one means such as an aerosol or spray; most of the parasites die, but after a few weeks young larvae appear from the surviving eggs.

The handlers believe that the product did not work, so they buy smoke bombs against insects and successfully poison the young shoots. Although in fact, double treatment with the original product, and the same treatment, but only with checkers, would give the same effect.

Review

“We poisoned bedbugs three times with Raptor, but then we couldn’t stand it and bought Chinese smoke bombs. No matter how much you mess with these cans, bedbugs still survive somewhere. Checkers, of course, amazed us. It is difficult to use them; five hours after one of them was lit, there was so much smoke in the apartment that the walls were not visible. But absolutely all the bugs have died out. Half of them crawled into the middle of the room, and we swept the rest out from under the beds. But for seven months now, not a single one has been seen, pah-pah. By the way, one of our geraniums withered after this treatment, even though I brought all the flowers to the open balcony.”

Types of smoke bombs

Checkers can be classified according to two main parameters:

  • scope of application (for residential or non-residential premises);
  • activation method (to make smoke, the checker is either set on fire or placed in a jar of water).

IMPORTANT: bombs from which smoke begins to emit upon contact with water are called aquafumigators. The penetrating power of their smoke is lower than that of smoke from models with a ignited wick.

Among the most popular models available for sale in Russia today are:

  1. Japanese model "Samuro". It is recognized as the most effective for residential premises, but costs around 1000 rubles, and there is a risk of running into a fake. It is activated upon contact with water and is sufficient to treat rooms up to 26 square meters. m.

    Insecticidal bomb Samuro

  2. "Raptor". Activated upon contact with water. It releases a powerful paralytic substance that also affects bedbug eggs. One checker is enough to process 30 square meters. m. It ranks second in efficiency after the Japanese one, but costs several times less.

    Raptor

  3. "Pawn-B". It is characterized by the largest radius of action: one checker is enough to process a space of up to 300 square meters. m. It is used in agricultural premises and poisons, among other things, animals and birds that steal food supplies.

    Pawn – B

  4. Sulfur checker "Fas". It is used in non-residential premises, as in residential premises it causes poisoning in domestic animals.

    Checker “FAS”

  5. "Super face." This version of the Fas model is less toxic. It is suitable only for the destruction of small colonies of parasites, however, it harms human health much less.
  6. "Quiet evening". Optimal for warehouses with volumes up to 1000 cubic meters. m.

    Checker “Quiet evening”

  7. "Vortex". It is in demand in industry as it does not cause corrosion of equipment and at the same time destroys over 30 species of insects.

    Smoke bomb “Whirlwind”

These products are recognized as leaders in their respective segments.

To avoid counterfeits when choosing an Asian-made checker, you need to make sure that the chemical composition and the name of the manufacturer are indicated on the packaging.

What is a sulfur bomb for greenhouses and how is it used?

Sulfur bomb is produced in the form of tablets containing the active substance – sulfur. The set may contain from 5 to 10 tablets. In order to find out how much product is needed for a certain area, you should calculate its volume. On average, 40 cubic meters will require 20 tablets of the substance.

Useful properties of checkers:

  • Effective against fungal organisms, insects and bacteria;
  • Easy to use;
  • Good penetrating ability;
  • Availability and cost-effectiveness.

One of the disadvantages is its toxicity, so use requires caution and strict adherence to the included instructions.

The fact is that due to the interaction of smoke and water, an acid is formed that, in addition to pests, can also kill organisms necessary for soil fertility.

A sulfur bomb is not used if the greenhouse frame is made of metal elements, since sulfur dioxide has a destructive effect on metal. In addition, fumigation does not affect the deeper layers of the soil, and it cannot be carried out at the beginning of sowing and during the entire growing season.

When treatment is carried out frequently, the polycarbonate coating may lose its transparency and develop cracks.

Can it be used in an apartment?

Using a smoke bomb in an apartment
Cypermethrin has low toxicity for humans and mammals. According to the GOST classification 12.1.007-76, it belongs to class 4 of low-hazard compounds. If you follow the rules for using checkers, cypermethrin, if it accidentally gets on human skin, will not give a sensitizing or irritating effect.

If we are talking about permethrin as such, due to its high toxicity, it is not intended for residential premises, but for industrial or agricultural facilities.

IMPORTANT: after reading the instructions for using the checker, it is advisable to double-check the information received on the Internet, since a mistake can be too costly for your health.

Advantages and disadvantages of use

Smoke bombs against bedbugs have the following advantages:

  1. High efficiency. Smoke penetrates absolutely into all corners of the room, destroying, among other things, those insects that are hidden under baseboards, wallpaper or upholstery. It is equally destructive for both adult parasites and larvae.
  2. Availability. On the Internet it is very easy to find an online store with smoke bombs against bedbugs. In offline retail outlets, checkers are not as widely available as sprays and crayons, due to their increased health hazard. You can purchase them in specialized stores of insecticides and gardening supplies. The cost of checkers starts from 100 rubles.
  3. Economical. One bomb is enough to clear a room of up to 300 m2 from bedbugs (if we are not talking about an aquafumigator).
  4. Versatility. At the same time as bedbugs, the smoke will destroy cockroaches, lice and molds that provoke the development of respiratory tract diseases in humans and animals.

The negative aspects of this disinfestation method are as follows:

  1. Smoke can travel through ventilation pipes to neighbors several floors up and down.
  2. If a fire alarm is installed in the room, it may go off.
  3. Intoxication due to permethrin inhalation, although unlikely, is still possible. This can happen if personal protective equipment was not used when treating the room, if the room was not ventilated for a sufficient time after treatment, or if it was not wet cleaned. Not only people, but also pets can suffer from intoxication.

Japanese and Chinese manufacturers are actively working on creating checkers optimized for use in apartment buildings.

Why treat a greenhouse with checkers?

Bacteria, microorganisms, and harmful insects can reduce all the gardener’s efforts to nothing. A smoke bomb for a greenhouse is an inexpensive, effective, easy-to-use product used to sanitize a room from harmful insects and diseases.

Types of checkers for greenhouses

Checkers for processing greenhouses differ in the components included in their composition:

  • Sulfur compounds, when burned, sulfur anhydride is formed - a toxic substance that fights well against fungi, small insects, and mites. Sulfur bombs are suitable for bactericidal and insecticidal fumigation of greenhouses.
  • Hexachlorane is a systemic substance, an enteric insecticide, and has a nerve paralytic effect. It is used to destroy soil-dwelling insects, copes well with butterfly caterpillars, but is completely useless in the fight against herbivorous mites and cocticides.
  • Didecyldimethylammonium bromide checkers have significant bactericidal and fungicidal activity. Effective against fungal and bacterial infections, and also destroys insects in the greenhouse.
  • Permethrin is an insecticide that has a nerve-paralyzing effect. Destroys flying insects, used against moths and ants.
  • Tobacco smoke bombs - when smoldering, nicotine is released, which works to kill insects and fight diseases.

Why checkers are effective

Treating a greenhouse with a sulfur bomb is considered the most effective way to disinfect indoor soil and the room itself. The destruction of diseases and insects occurs by fumigation. Smoke is able to penetrate into the most inaccessible places, including inside the ground, into cracks, connecting nodes, and places where the frame and covering material fit. Fumigation with checkers allows you to process large areas of greenhouses with minimal costs and little effort.

Important: Fumigation does not have a residual effect; the smoke destroys diseases and insects in the greenhouse only during the burning of the bomb and a few hours later. In case of severe infection, it is recommended to repeat the procedure 2-3 times.

Instructions and rules of use

Using checkers it is allowed to carry out disinfestation of the following objects:

  • apartments;
  • private houses and dachas;
  • hangars and warehouses;
  • industrial areas;
  • garages;
  • gardens and campsites;
  • greenhouses and greenhouses.

Sometimes a one-time treatment is enough to completely rid your home of blood-sucking parasites. However, to achieve a guaranteed result, it is recommended to repeat the procedure after 2 weeks, since the smoke only affects adult bedbugs and larvae, but not eggs.

Security measures

Disinfestation using smoke bombs should be carried out only with personal protective equipment. They are put on before the actual use of checkers, and are removed only after the treatment of the room is completed and it has been ventilated.

Ideally, if there is an opportunity to wear a full chemical protective suit. Otherwise, you will need a respirator, rubber gloves and safety glasses. Gloves should be discarded after processing is completed.

You should wear personal protective equipment when lighting a smoke bomb.

In extreme cases, instead of a full protective kit, it is permissible to use a gauze bandage soaked in a soda solution: dilute a teaspoon of soda in one glass of water and soak the gauze with this liquid.

People prone to allergic reactions and suffering from asthma, viral or bacterial respiratory diseases are strictly not recommended to carry out the treatment on their own.

Preparation for processing

All windows in the room are tightly closed and ventilation holes are sealed with tape. Food, hygiene items, electronics and clothing are carefully packaged in impenetrable casings to prevent them from becoming saturated with smoke. All cabinets and drawers are opened so that smoke can easily penetrate them. Furniture is disassembled and laid out in parts on the floor. Bedding is removed from the mattresses and placed vertically, leaning against the wall. Fire safety sensors are turned off. There should be no objects left in the room that will first come into contact with smoke and then come into direct contact with human skin.

Processing process

If the checker is inside a jar and is activated by contact with liquid, this jar is filled with water to the indicated mark.

If the checker has a fuse, it is set on fire. To do this, the product is placed on a sheet of metal, inside a metal bucket, in a ceramic container, or on a brick. The burning of the checker lasts 10–20 minutes. It is important that there are no flammable objects within its reach.

After this, the room is left for several hours - the exact time is indicated in the instructions for use of the checker. A maximum of 2 minutes is allotted to leave the room - this is how long it takes for the wick to burn, after which toxic smoke will begin to enter the air.

What to do after treatment?

Upon completion of the treatment, a person in a protective suit enters the room, opens the windows and leaves the house to be ventilated for at least 20 minutes. After this, a thorough wet cleaning is carried out in the house, adding soda ash to the water at the rate of 250 g per 1 bucket. If the person who entered the room to open the windows did not have a full chemical protective suit, clothing should be removed and washed thoroughly.

Cost of products

The average cost of products for outdoor use or for edging industrial premises starts from 50 rubles per piece. Bombs for treating residential premises with an area of about 10 m2 cost approximately 150 rubles, and for a room from 30 m2 the cost of a smoke bomb is from 350 rubles and more. The use of smoke bombs to kill insects is convenient and effective; not a single insect can remain alive after such treatment of a room or garden plot. But when using this pest control product, it is necessary to strictly observe safety precautions, since it contains toxic chemicals in high concentrations. Despite this, checkers are an effective means of combating insects and, if used correctly, will not cause harm to health.
