It would seem that when scabies appears, there is nothing particularly terrible - it is not pain or other severe manifestations. But if a person has at least once encountered unbearable itching, when he is ready to tear the skin just to get rid of the discomfort that has arisen, he will understand how unpleasant it is. But it’s not just about the discomfort experienced by the affected, damaged area of skin - this is an “open gate” for the invasion of harmful pathogenic flora. Once scabies appears, it is difficult to get rid of it without the use of medications. In relief therapy, various means are mainly used, including ointment for scabies, industrially prepared, pharmaceutically prepared, or made at home.

List of effective drugs

Anti-scabies drugs, regardless of the form of release, chemical composition or medicinal properties, are prescribed only after a diagnostic study. The patient needs to undergo tests, on the basis of which an appropriate course of therapy is drawn up. Below are the medications that are most often prescribed when diagnosing scabies.

Table. Review of drugs for scabies.

Drug nameDescription

"Ivermectin"An effective antiparasitic agent, the active components of which have a detrimental effect not only on scabies mites, but also on worms. The tablets should be taken in the morning on an empty stomach.
"Clofenotan"Organochlorine insecticide with antipruritic and anti-scabies properties. The drug has many contraindications and side effects, so Clofenotan can only be used under the supervision of a doctor.
"Tiabendazole"Available in the form of tablets or cream. But since long-term internal use of the drug has a bad effect on the digestive system, doctors prescribe Thiabendazole in the form of a cream.
"Crotamiton"Another anti-itch remedy in cream form. Immediately after applying the drug, itching and other unpleasant symptoms of scabies are eliminated. Crotamiton has no side effects, but it is still not recommended for use during pregnancy.
"Benzyl benzoate"An excellent medication prescribed for the treatment of ectoparasitosis, including scabies. Benzyl benzoate is easy to use, as it does not leave marks on clothing. But uncontrolled use of the drug may cause complications.
"Sulfuric ointment"One of the cheapest and at the same time effective anti-scabies. The ointment has a keratolytic effect on the patient’s body, due to which the parasite dies already in the first week of therapy. Like other potent drugs, Sulfur Ointment should not be used during pregnancy.

Preparations for the treatment of scabies

Regardless of the cost, chemical composition or effectiveness of the chosen drug, self-medication for scabies is strictly not recommended. All actions must be agreed with a dermatologist.

Indications for use of ointment for scabies

Any drug is initially developed and released for use in a specific field of medicine. There are also indications for the use of ointment for scabies:

  • Suppression of the life activity of scabies mites.
  • Acne.
  • Seborrheic dermatitis.
  • Pediculosis.
  • Acne is an inflammatory skin disease caused by changes in the pilosebaceous structures.
  • Fungal infections of the epidermis.
  • Ointments of this group are also used in the treatment of similar skin diseases caused by infectious lesions of the dermis.
  • Treatment of psoriasis.

Pharmacodynamics

When developing ointments for scabies, pharmacists ensured that the pharmacodynamics of the drug would effectively lead to the death of the scabies pathogen. That is, drugs of this pharmacological group must have scabicidal properties. Also, anti-itch medications usually have mild anti-inflammatory properties. The full mechanism of the drug’s effect on the affected skin is not completely known today.

Preparations containing sulfur, in addition to anti-scabies, also have keratolytic properties, which makes it possible to improve the degree of penetration of active drugs into the deeper layers of the dermis.

If the drug contains the chemical compound esdepaletrin, then it, being a toxic poison that effectively destroys insects, has a negative effect on neurons in the central nervous system. This effect is expressed in a mismatch in cation exchange, that is, a disruption in the metabolism of positively charged ions that help in the normal functioning of nerve cell membranes. Such chemical elements include magnesium, calcium, sodium, potassium and some others.

Piperonyl butoxide, present in the drug, increases the pharmacodynamics of esdepaletrin.

Using ointment for scabies during pregnancy

The female body is quite sensitive to various kinds of external influences. Especially representatives of the weaker half of humanity begin to be more careful about their body when conception has occurred and the woman is about to become a mother. During this period, any disease and any infection threatens not only the woman’s health, but also her unborn child.

But here a paradoxical contradiction arises: during the period of gestation, it is advisable to avoid taking any medication, and at the same time, if an invasion has occurred, then urgent intervention is necessary to prevent even greater complications.

The use of ointment for scabies during pregnancy and lactation is acceptable, but the decision to introduce the drug into the treatment protocol should be made only by the attending physician or obstetrician-gynecologist who is monitoring the pregnancy. The decision to prescribe an ointment for scabies is made if the real need for medical intervention to relieve a woman’s health problem significantly exceeds the potential negative impact that the chemical compounds included in the medicine can have on the normal development of the fetus or already born child.

The most commonly used drugs in this situation are benzyl benzoate and spregal. A number of medications are strictly contraindicated for use during this period. For example, Medifox or permethrin.

If symptoms of the disease appear in a woman while she is breastfeeding her newborn baby, and in order to relieve the problem it becomes necessary to use an ointment for scabies, then doctors recommend stopping breastfeeding for the period of therapy.

Drug Para-Plus

This drug is most often used during the treatment of pediculosis, but it is also possible to use it at the first stage of scabies development, when the signs of the disease are not yet clearly expressed and do not require the use of toxic drugs.

The drug Para-Plus against pediculosis can also be used against scabies at an early stage

The active ingredients of this drug are as follows:

  • permethrin;
  • malathion;
  • Peronyl Butoxide.

The drug is well tolerated by patients; there are rare cases of side effects and signs of overdose. As a rule, they manifest themselves in the form of headaches and vomiting.

Before starting treatment, you need to take a shower, then dry your body thoroughly. From a distance of half a meter, Para-Plus should be sprayed onto the infected areas. It is best to use the medication for those areas of the skin that are not yet scratched. This is due to the fact that the tick can quickly move from a treated area to a healthy one.

The duration of treatment is determined only by the doctor, taking into account the condition of the sick person. As a rule, manipulations are carried out over 5-7 days, but the exact period can only be determined during an in-person examination.

Spray aerosol for scabies Para-Plus can be used for combined treatment, which will enhance the effect of the active ingredients. But at the same time, it is necessary to choose another drug with other active ingredients so as not to cause an overdose.

Contraindications to the use of scabies ointment

Many patients believe that if the drug is used for external use, then it is completely safe and cannot cause harm to humans. But that's not true. Any medication, acting on the human body, is capable of healing, but at the same time it does not always have a positive effect on other organs and systems. There are also contraindications to the use of scabies ointment, which are limited to the following pathologies:

  • In case of hypersensitivity to the constituent components of the drug.
  • Drugs in this group should not be prescribed to children under three years of age.
  • If the patient has obstructive bronchitis.
  • If the patient has a history of bronchial asthma.
  • They are prescribed with special caution to young patients, pregnant women and those who are breastfeeding their baby. Prescription is carried out only according to medical indications.
  • Tendency to allergic reactions.

What is scabies, its causes

The disease is contagious because the scabies mite very quickly penetrates the human epidermis and is transmitted:

  • from person to person (through handshakes, bed linen, clothes, towels);
  • through touching door handles, handrails in public transport;
  • during sexual contact with an infected person.

According to statistics, not only people leading an immoral lifestyle become infected with the disease. If someone in the family becomes infected with a tick, then, as a rule, soon everyone in the household will become ill with the disease. The incubation period is two weeks.

The cause is a parasite that gets on the skin - the scabies mite. The carrier of the infection is the female, who penetrates the skin and makes passages to lay eggs.

Scabies itching is noticeable on the skin upon close examination; it appears as a small white or yellowish dot. The parasite is hardy: it can withstand cold and heat, and is resistant to disinfectants.

The peak incidence occurs in autumn-winter. Because the tick dies at a temperature of 21°C, and in the cold season there is crowding of people and closer interaction.

Side effects of scabies ointment

Medicines of this pharmacological group are well tolerated. But due to the fact that the human body is individual, it may or may not react differently to the administration of a particular drug, manifesting itself with certain symptoms. Side effects of scabies ointment may also occur. Quite rarely, but slight hyperemia can be observed; the patient begins to feel a slight tingling and burning sensation at the site of application of the medicine.

If undesirable effects occur, you should stop using the medicine and consult your doctor.

Types of scabies

Depending on the course of the disease, several types of pathology are distinguished:

  • ordinary scabies (or typical), is the most common and has unambiguous clinical manifestations;
  • complicated scabies occurs against the background of normal scabies, when in the absence of adequate therapy a secondary infection occurs;
  • pseudoscabies, occurs when infected with a mite from an animal, is accompanied by itching and goes away on its own after stopping contact with the infected animal;
  • Scabies without burrows occurs without the presence of scabies burrows, but with small bags on the skin filled with liquid, about 3 mm in diameter. Infection occurs by larvae;
  • scabies that occurs due to excessive cleanliness. Pathology occurs in people who abuse body washing due to habit or profession. The symptoms of the disease are mild due to regular washing of parasites from the skin;
  • nodular scabies, it is characterized by the formation of hardened areas of bluish or brown color on the surface of the skin. Remains for some time even after treatment;
  • Norwegian scabies is the most severe form of the disease, affecting people with weak immune systems (those suffering from tuberculosis, AIDS, drug addicts). It is characterized by a huge number of parasites and hyperkeratosis of the skin in the absence of itching.

Names of ointments for scabies

The appearance of an unpleasant itch that you want to scratch brings many uncomfortable moments in the patient’s life. If such symptoms appear, you should seek advice from a specialist. A qualified doctor will conduct an examination and determine the cause of these symptoms. Only after this can a specialist adequately describe the treatment, which will most likely include ointment for scabies.

The choice of drugs with the necessary pharmacodynamic characteristics is quite wide. Only the attending physician can understand them and prescribe the “correct” drug. In this article, we will only introduce respondents to the list of medications that meet the necessary medical requirements. Let us indicate some names of ointments for scabies.

Drugs that can effectively solve the problem under consideration include:

  • Permethrin ointment.
  • Sulfuric ointment.
  • Benzyl benzoate (Benzylii benzoas medicinalis).
  • Medifox.
  • Crotamiton.
  • Benzyl benzoate (Benzylii benzoas medicinalis).
  • Spregal.
  • Corticosteroid ointments.
  • Antihistamines.
  • Permethrin.

Sulfur ointment for scabies

This chemical composition is quite actively used in the treatment of many diseases of a dermatological nature. But sulfur ointment for scabies is especially effective. This medicine has a softening effect on the dermis and does a good job of cleansing the skin of the affected area from dead cells. The sulfur-based drug shows mild antibacterial and antifungal effects. It's practically safe.

The chemical compound sulfur itself does not have any medicinal properties, but its presence in the composition of the drug increases the activity of certain organic substances, which has a beneficial effect on relieving itching and more effective healing of the affected area.

The result of sulfur and organic matter is the formation of various sulfides and pentathionic acid, which have the necessary keratoplastic properties. Such compounds, which activate regenerative processes, allow you to accelerate the formation of a layer of young skin cells. Sulfur ointment is a fairly reliable remedy for solving this problem.

Side symptoms of its application include a slight decrease in skin moisture. One of its most significant disadvantages is that it has a fairly strong and unpleasant odor, which permeates the patient’s clothes, as well as the patient’s bedding and bath items. At the same time, the treatment process is quite long, which, combined with the smell, does not make this ointment the most popular.

Sulfur ointment is quite inexpensive and can be easily purchased at any pharmacy without a prescription.

Doctors recommend two methods of using the drug in question:

  • The drug is applied to the diseased skin areas every day before bed for five days. The procedure is carried out before bedtime, and rinsed with warm water in the morning. Bedding and clothes are changed and washed, simultaneously disinfected with high temperature (this can be done by boiling or ironing). Suitable for patients who cannot stay out of the house throughout the entire treatment.
  • The second method is to cover the affected area of the dermis with the drug overnight. The medicine is not washed off for four days. During this period, there is no need to change bed linen and clothes. After this, the ointment is washed off, and the linen and bed can be disinfected. Before going to bed, the drug is applied again, which is washed off the next morning. The course of therapy has been completed. This technique is suitable for patients who do not plan to leave their home during the entire course of treatment.

Sprays for scabies during pregnancy

Since pregnancy is a condition in which the woman’s immune system and body are vulnerable, it is recommended to use formulations that do not contain highly toxic substances.

Greek balm

The medicine has a pleasant aroma of flowers and resembles essential oil. You need to apply it to the affected areas of the skin where the rash is localized. Although it is not an aerosol, the product is widely used in the process of eliminating scabies mites. To carry out the procedure, take a sterile cotton swab, soak it with the composition and subsequently come into contact with the skin to apply the medicine. You should not swim or allow any other moisture to penetrate the epithelium. In 2-3 days you will get rid of these parasites forever.

Scabies scabies

This method refers to folk methods of getting rid of the symptoms of scabies. It is made in the form of a lotion or spray (the second method is easy to apply). The exact composition is prescribed by the doctor, taking into account the indications and individual characteristics of the body. After the treatment procedure, you must wait 30 minutes until the active substances are absorbed into the skin. The positive aspect of this method is the effect on the tick and the lack of impact on the health of the pregnant woman.

Spregal

Of all the listed drugs, only Spregal is acceptable for use by pregnant women. The product is safe in any month and has virtually no contraindications. The only drawback is the high cost.

Scabies ointment for children

It’s unpleasant when illness overtakes adults, but it’s much harder if children get sick. The skin of young patients is still thin, not roughened and more sensitive, so if a problem arises, to solve it, it is not always possible to use the same drugs that easily help adult patients.

The modern range of products from pharmacological companies makes it quite easy to select an ointment for scabies for children, taking into account the individuality of the child’s body.

There are some features when using these drugs to treat young patients:

  • An adult should apply the medicine to the affected area quite carefully.
  • It must be rubbed into all areas affected by the disease, excluding areas of the face and scalp.
  • If this is a baby (or a small child), in order to protect him from getting the drug in his eyes, it is advisable to wear a vest with stitched sleeves or mittens. If it is easier, it is acceptable to apply the ointment while the child is sleeping.

Scabies ointment, odorless

If there is a need to treat the pathology in question, and the patient cannot afford to sit at home (he needs to attend work, go to the store, use public transport, and so on), there is a need to use odorless medicines.

If a patient needs to be prescribed an odorless ointment for scabies, the doctor may choose zinc ointment. But at the same time, he will have to simultaneously prescribe other drugs that have antiparasitic characteristics. This is due to the fact that the mentioned drug does not have such properties in its pharmacodynamics. It only effectively relieves the symptoms of scabies, which brings discomfort to the patient.

Treatment of scabies - reviews

Natalya Romysh

I encountered scabies upon arrival from the sanatorium. I have never seen such horror. A dermatologist saved me from panic and prescribed effective treatment. During therapy, I had to actually isolate myself from my family so as not to infect them. The dermatologist prescribed Spregal spray. I used it for two days to treat my skin. The symptoms went away about three days after the start of treatment. After 8 days the treatment was repeated. I liked the effect. I thought it would take much longer to be treated.

Elena Kutygina

I had to learn what scabies is thanks to my cousin, who leads an antisocial lifestyle. A special disinfection was carried out using A-Par aerosol. The pleasure is not cheap, but there was no other choice (my dear aunt lives with a relative, so the treatment was 100% necessary). The smell is a little specific, but definitely not dichlorophos.
