Description, composition and release forms
In its pure form, chlorpyrifos is a crystallized white powder. The substance has a specific odor. It dissolves in water at a temperature of +250C and is completely destroyed in alkalis. The substance remains active on surfaces for 1-2 months, and when it gets into the soil – 120 days.
Chlorpyrifos is sold in the form of a solution, the concentration of which is 48%. The product is packaged in plastic containers of 1 l, 5 l, 25 l.
You can find other drugs based on this toxic substance on sale. They are available in the form of a liquid suspension. In addition to chlorpyrifos, the products also contain a second active ingredient – cypermethrin. This combination allows you to achieve maximum effectiveness against cockroaches and bedbugs.
Popular insecticidal preparations:
- Chlorpyrivit;
- Maxifos;
- Get;
- Agran;
- Sychlor;
- Sinuzan;
- Chlorpyrimark.
Products containing chlorpyrifos have a detrimental effect on cockroaches, bedbugs, ticks, flies, lice, and ants.

Types of liquid insecticides
There are two groups of liquid insecticides that differ not only in chemical form, but also in cost.
- The first type is concentrated products. This is a solution of the active substance in high concentration. The poisonous substance is generally safe for humans and only harms insects. Modern products do not have an unpleasant odor and have a prolonged effect. They create a protective film and protect surfaces from cockroaches for several weeks. Can be used in an apartment, office, country house.
- Microencapsulated drugs (they are also called nano-granular). The fundamental difference is that the active substance is enclosed in microcapsules. And the capsules, in turn, are in an aqueous solution. Microencapsulated drugs are considered to show increased safety. They have no smell at all. The protective film remains on surfaces for up to six months. The most expensive and most modern means for combating cockroaches.
If the budget for insecticidal treatment is not limited, you should choose from microencapsulated preparations. At the moment, only professional processing can compare with them.
A liquid preparation is an aqueous solution of the active substance, which can be dissolved or enclosed in microcapsules. On sale you can find products with volumes from 10 to 150 ml. In professional chemical stores it is possible to purchase half-liter packages, but for disinfestation in one apartment this will be too much. This volume is required by professional exterminators.
Each package must contain information about the certification passed and the level of danger. Also, instructions from the manufacturer are attached to the drugs. If you follow the recommendations, such products are safe and quickly give the desired effect. In Russia, only those drugs that have been certified by Rospotrebnadzor are sold.
Mechanism of action on bedbugs and cockroaches
Chlorpyrifos has a contact effect. When a substance enters the body of an insect, it penetrates the body and blocks the enzyme responsible for transmitting nerve impulses from the brain to the muscles. This leads to paralysis and then death of the insect.
The advantage of drugs based on chlorpyrifos is that they have a delayed effect. Therefore, an infected individual, remaining active for some time, brings the poison to the nest, where it transmits it to its relatives. This leads to massive death of pests and parasites.
Chlorpyrifos destroys not only adults and larvae, but also oviposition. As a result, the offspring stops developing, and the protective shell gradually dries out. But to achieve such a result, direct contact of the egg with a toxic substance is necessary.
Pesticide compounds against insects
Hardly anyone will argue that folk recipes or homemade traps are as effective as specially designed insecticidal preparations. Chemical science does not stand still, and for several decades humanity has been successfully using pesticides to kill insects.
If you thought that pesticides were something from the field of agriculture, you were not mistaken: the list of substances is huge and their areas of application can be very different. But today we will only talk about those that will help destroy cockroaches. Despite the huge number of pesticide substances, mainly 5 of them are used in insecticidal preparations:
I will tell you how these compounds act on insects, what preparations they are used in, and how toxic they are to humans.
Chlorpyrifos
Broad-spectrum contact insecticide. This means that preparations based on chlorpyrifos are used to combat different types of insects:
- with cockroaches;
- with ants;
- with midges and moths;
- with bedbugs;
- with woodlice, silverfish, etc.
The word “contact” means that chlorpyrifos affects insects through physical contact. The substance penetrates the body through chitinous integuments, the respiratory tract and the digestive tract. After interacting with the poison, irreversible processes begin in the cockroach’s body that lead to death:
- After a few minutes, muscle tremors and a disruption in the oxygen supply to vital organs begin.
- Then the transmission of nerve impulses slows down until the functioning of the nervous system completely stops.
- Finally, complete paralysis sets in, and all these consequences of poisoning together cause the death of the insect.
Chlorpyrifos belongs to toxicity class II. This means that they are highly dangerous for humans and pets. The use of products based on this substance requires careful adherence to the instructions for use and safety precautions, otherwise intoxication cannot be avoided.
Pros and cons of products containing chlorpyrifos
In addition to being highly toxic to humans, drugs containing chlorpyrifos can cause resistance in insects. This means that after prolonged exposure of the component to arthropod organisms, the latter lose sensitivity to the poison, which means it is no longer effective. It is recommended to change the product from time to time so as not to cause addiction in cockroaches.
As for the advantages, the main advantage of drugs based on chlorpyrifos is the ability to affect not only adult individuals, but also their eggs. True, under one condition - the product must be applied directly near the places where ootheca are deposited. In addition, chlorpyrifos remains active for approximately 30 days. This means that it has a prolonged preventive effect against re-infestation of the house by insects.
Preparations based on chlorpyrifos
I have already said that this substance is used in many insecticides. Here is a list of the most popular ones:
- Globol gel;
- Get Total emulsion;
- Get Dry stick, etc.
Choose any based on the specifics of their application - this information is usually indicated on the packaging. Preparations with chlorpyrifos will get rid of cockroaches in a few days, but be prepared for the fact that the treatment will have to be repeated after 10-14 days. This is necessary in order to certainly destroy the young generation that will hatch from the ootheca.
Cypermethrin
A contact-intestinal insecticide from the group of pyrethroids, in its pure form it is a viscous liquid without color and pronounced odor. Widely used in agricultural disinfestation, as well as in the destruction of insects in industrial and technical premises and in everyday life.
The contact-intestinal type of exposure implies that cypermethrin acts on the body through the chitinous integument and the digestive tract. Once in the insect's body, the substance blocks the transmission of nerve impulses, provoking complete muscle paralysis, as a result of which the insect dies.
Cypermethrin is considered a broad-spectrum poison, but although it can be used to destroy almost all types of synanthropic insects, it works best against cockroaches and bedbugs. In addition to direct destruction, this compound in a sublethal dosage (that is, less than what is needed for death) repels insects. This property allows the use of cypermethrin-based preparations not only for disinfestation, but also for the prevention of re-infestation of the apartment.
Cypermethrin belongs to hazard classes II and III. This means that it is highly or moderately hazardous depending on the concentration and dosage. In any case, when using it, you should not neglect the rules of personal safety - be sure to use protective equipment and follow all the manufacturer’s recommendations.
Pros and cons of products with cypermethrin
The main advantage of drugs based on this component is that they do not cause resistance in insects, that is, they are equally effective throughout the entire period of use. Another plus is a month of preventive effect: cypermethrin retains its properties during this period, repelling insects or destroying the most curious ones. After this period, the substance completely decomposes into safe components under the influence of ultraviolet radiation and oxygen.
As for the disadvantages, there is only one - cypermethrin has no effect on insect eggs. This means that repeated treatment cannot be avoided, even despite the prolonged effect of the drug.
Preparations based on cypermethrin
This substance was discovered in 1971, and since then it has become a component of many insecticidal preparations:
- "Cypermethrin";
- products from the “Clean House” line;
- FAS;
- Medilis Cyper, etc.
These products will destroy all insects in your home in 1-2 days, but be prepared for the fact that you will have to re-treat. If you use any form of the drug with this component, do not use other forms of insecticides at the same time: for example, do not mix the gel with the aerosol. In the case of cypermethrin, this situation can lead to an increased risk of intoxication.

Fipronil
An agricultural and household insecticide that is used against synanthropic and harmful insects. This substance is included in many insecticidal preparations due to its versatility - with its help you can get rid of almost all types of insect pests. Fipronil is a contact-intestinal insecticide, that is, it affects cockroaches both from the inside and from the outside. When the substance enters the insect’s body through the digestive tract or respiratory system, it causes the following disorders:
- inhibits the transmission of nerve impulses and the nervous system as a whole;
- disrupts the blood supply to vital organs;
- causes muscle tremors up to complete paralysis.
The poisoned insect does not die immediately, but only after a few hours. This fact partly explains the high effectiveness of fipronil-based products: one individual, after contact with the poison, will return to the nest and infect several more. Moreover, cockroaches are characterized by cannibalism and necrophagy - they often eat their dead fellows. This is another way the poison can influence the colony, since by eating an individual killed by fipronil, healthy cockroaches are poisoned and die themselves. However, the substance does not affect cockroach eggs, so one way or another, the treatment will have to be repeated when the nymphs hatch - this is approximately 10-14 days after the initial treatment.
Fipronil belongs to toxicity class II. This means that the substance is highly dangerous for people and pets, and when using it it is necessary to use personal protective equipment. Pros and cons of products with fipronil Let's start with the disadvantages, since there is only one: a high level of toxicity for humans. Failure to follow the instructions for use may result in severe intoxication requiring hospitalization.
But the advantages of fipronil-based products are much greater:
- Versatility. Preparations based on this component will rid your home of any insects.
- Efficiency - using this substance, you can be sure that not a single individual will survive.
- Speed. In just a day, or at most two days, the Prussians will only have unpleasant memories.
- Prolonged action that lasts for a month after treatment.
- Under the influence of the sun and oxygen, fipronil decomposes into safe compounds, but this process is slow, due to which fipronil has a preventive effect. Preparations based on fipronil Perhaps the only people who have not heard about these drugs are those who have not heard about cockroaches themselves. Fipronil-based drugs are on everyone’s lips due to their high effectiveness, here are the most popular of them:
- Tiuram powder (also known as cable or tire powder);
- solution or granules for preparing the Regent solution;
- gel “Brownie Proshka”;
- and others.
The high toxicity of fipronil necessitates the use of protective equipment - rubber gloves, goggles and a respirator. If symptoms of intoxication nevertheless occur, it is better not to wait for more severe consequences and seek medical help as soon as possible - this is a guarantee of the absence of complications.
Fention
A household and agricultural insecticide that, in its pure form, looks like a clear oil with a yellowish-brown tint. Has a slight garlic scent. Fenthion is a contact-intestinal insecticide and can also enter the insect's body through the respiratory tract. Penetrating into the body of a cockroach, fenthion inhibits all vital systems, including the breathing process, as a result of which the insect dies.
Fenthion belongs to toxicity class II, which means that products based on it can cause harm to people and animals. To prevent this from happening, you must carefully follow the instructions on the packaging and take precautions.
Pros and cons of products with fenthion
The main disadvantage of fenthion is its cumulative nature. This means that the substance does not decompose, but accumulates in the room, which can cause an allergic reaction or intoxication. Moreover, the owners will not immediately realize that these symptoms are associated with the insecticidal agent - after all, they have already used it before without any consequences.
The substance has many more advantages:
- versatility;
- efficiency;
- The preventive effect lasts for 2-3 weeks.
Preparations based on fenthion
This insecticide is used mainly in universal preparations, such as:
With the help of these means you can get rid of not only Prussians, but also almost all types of synanthropic and harmful insects. In addition, preparations based on fenthion can be used to destroy ixodid ticks, carriers of tick-borne encephalitis.
Fenvalerate
Insectoacaricidal substance of contact-intestinal type of action. Fenvalerate inhibits all vital systems of the insect, causing death. It is not as common as other insecticidal substances, so we will not dwell on it in detail. I will only say that fenvalerate belongs to the second class of danger, that is, it is quite toxic to people and animals.
Based on fenvalerate, the product “Phenomenon Dust” is made, which is intended to combat domestic insects. In general, this substance is used more often in agriculture than in everyday life. Which remedy should you choose?
Now that you know how the most effective cockroach repellents work, you can safely go to the store and take any of the above remedies:
- Globol gel;
- Get Total emulsion;
- Get Dry stick;
- "Cypermethrin";
- products from the “Clean House” line;
- FAS;
- Medilis Cyper;
- Tiuram powder (also known as cable or tire powder);
- solution or granules for preparing the Regent solution;
- gel “Brownie Proshka”;
- "Executioner";
- "Bifethrin";
- "Buff Dust";
- "Medilis";
- "Force site";
- "The Dust Phenomenon."
It is these powerful drugs that will show the best results due to the content of potent substances that we discussed above. But all these products are available in a variety of forms (gel, powder, liquid, granules, emulsion, etc.), so which one should you choose?
Forms of insecticides and their advantages
Let's take a quick look at the benefits of these forms of insecticides so you can determine which product is best for you.
Perhaps the most popular form of insecticide. The gels have earned consumer recognition for the following qualities:
- convenient packaging that allows you to apply the product without using additional equipment;
- prolonged action due to the content of preservatives and a fatty base - gel poisons remain effective for up to 9 months;
- absence of odor and toxic fumes;
- bitter taste that repels children and pets.
Powder
People love powdered poisons because they are cheap and easy to use - you just need to open the bag and scatter its contents in the right places. True, after processing you will have to devote some time to cleaning.
Solutions and aerosols
We love these products for:
- the fastest effect compared to other forms;
- ease of use - you just need to prepare the apartment and spray the aerosol;
- no need for thorough cleaning after treatment;
- versatility - aerosols and sprays more often than other means work simultaneously against different types of insects.
Insecticidal traps
Funds that stand apart from the rest. This is all thanks to the way they are used: all you need to do is open the package and set the traps. Then they work without your participation, and the poison in them remains active for several months after opening the package. This means that when using traps, you do not need to re-treat the room and worry about additional preventative measures.
Sticks
Another unusual remedy. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that it can be applied to those surfaces that are not very convenient to apply with other forms - for example, on the backs of carpets, on upholstered furniture, etc.
Fumigators and aquafumigators
These are entire devices that work by releasing toxic fumes. There are water and electronic ones. These devices are very effective and easy to use, but they also have a drawback - as a rule, they are very expensive. But they are universal and durable - you only need to change the plates or liquid (depending on the type of device).

Emulsions and powders for preparing solutions
I can safely say that these products are in the least demand due to the nature of their application. First you need to prepare the solution, then prepare the apartment, and only then carry out the treatment. But such drugs also have advantages:
- solutions based on emulsions or powders do not need to be washed off - as a rule, their active components decompose under the influence of the sun and air;
- economical consumption, which allows you to cheaply process large areas. Preventing re-infestation of your home with cockroaches Whatever remedy you choose, if cockroaches live with your neighbors, and you always have a mountain of unwashed dishes in your kitchen and garbage has been sitting in the bin for a week, it won’t be of any use. After disinfestation, the most important thing is to prevent the Prussians from returning. Let me give you a couple of tips, following which you can forget about these vile creatures:
- Team up with neighbors and utility companies to effectively control insects.
- Get into the habit of taking out the trash every day, not leaving dirty dishes in the sink, wiping the table and the floor underneath from crumbs immediately after dinner, regularly wet cleaning your apartment, and wiping the bathroom and sink dry before going to bed.
- Do not leave food where insects can reach it. Place everything in airtight containers and in the refrigerator.

One of the most effective insect repellents is the organophosphate insecticide chlorpyrifos. It is often used not only for pest control in residential premises, but also in summer cottages and in medical institutions.
Application
Before using chlorpyrifos-based preparations against bedbugs or cockroaches, you must first prepare the room. To do this, it is necessary to move furniture away to open access to possible places where insects are localized, remove animals from the premises, remove indoor plants, and pack food in sealed plastic containers.
After the preparatory measures, you should wet clean the room and put mesh or gauze plugs on the ventilation grilles so that the pests do not move to the neighbors.
Disinsection should be carried out with the windows open. According to the instructions, it is necessary to prepare a working solution based on chlorpyrifos. To do this, you need to dilute 50 ml of emulsion in 10 liters of water, the temperature of which should be above +250C.
Spray the solution at a distance of 30 cm from the surface. When using bedbug repellent, upholstered furniture and beds should be thoroughly treated. Pay special attention to folds, seams and junctions of individual elements. And also spray the solution on the back of paintings, loose wallpaper, and into the cracks on the walls.
Argan
When using chlorpyrifos against cockroaches, the concentration of the working solution should be increased to 60 ml per 10 liters of water. It is necessary to treat baseboards, adjacent areas of walls and floors, pipe entry points in the kitchen, bathroom and toilet, the back surface of cabinets, the area under the sink and near the trash can.
After treating the windows and doors, you need to close and leave the room for 7-14 days. After the waiting period has expired, it is necessary to ventilate the room, vacuum the furniture, soft toys, carpets, and wash all surfaces in the house with a soap solution containing soda. When the number of pests and parasites is small, one treatment with chlorpyrifos is sufficient. But if necessary, disinfestation should be repeated after 2 weeks, which will achieve maximum effectiveness.
Typical processing errors
A good and proven drug is not all that is needed to get rid of cockroaches in an apartment. For successful control, it is important to properly prepare the room and carry out the treatment as thoroughly as possible. It must be remembered that cockroaches are difficult to remove the first time. Re-spraying may well be required. Also, the sanitary and epidemiological station warns that when processing you must strictly follow the instructions and be careful.
Naivety
Belief in some unique, miraculous remedy. Very often you can see advertisements for drugs that help against black and red cockroaches, and against bedbugs, and against other insects. Yes, modern products are very effective and excellent for controlling any pests, but it is important to thoroughly treat all surfaces. It is not enough to spray the product on surfaces. The poison should penetrate the cockroaches' homes and spread throughout the entire apartment. Insects die only after they come into direct contact with the poison. If the treatment is not carried out very carefully, this, on the contrary, will force the cockroaches to leave their hiding places, they will begin to crawl throughout the apartment and will actively reproduce.
Miser pays twice
Another mistake is the desire to save money. It is clear that for little money you can buy a high-quality product, for example, the quite affordable insecticide Cucaracha. It is clear that the German product will cost more than the Chinese one, and they will have the same active ingredient. Saving money at the store is good. But saving when diluting the concentrate is a recipe for failure. Do not try to treat a large area with a small bottle. The instructions clearly indicate how much footage one bottle is enough for. On average, one bottle is enough to treat two rooms. Also, do not create concentrates with your own hands. If you really want to use folk remedies, you can stop at boric acid.
Cleanliness
The third mistake is widespread. This is wet cleaning immediately after treatment. The fact is that to obtain the effect, the insect must come into contact with the poison. The microencapsulated product remains on surfaces for up to six months. This means that whenever a cockroach comes out of its hiding place, it will be destroyed. The maximum that can be done is to wipe the product off the work surfaces in the kitchen. Microcapsules or concentrates are a safe insect control product. They do not cause allergies and do not harm humans in any way. Similarly, the protective film is not dangerous for dogs, cats and other animals.
It is worth mentioning separately that if the treatment is carried out correctly, a high-quality insecticide is selected (Get, Cucaracha, Delta-Zone or another proven drug), then the effect should be visible from the first application. If you have to make a lot of effort to fight cockroaches, it is wiser to turn to specialists. By the way, the sanitary and epidemiological station carries out treatment in the apartment for free. Moreover, SES workers can tell you exactly how to remove insects. The sanitary and epidemiological station will also help determine the type of cockroaches: red, black or other exotic species.
Security measures
This organophosphate insecticide belongs to hazard class 2. Harm to humans from chlorpyrifos can be caused by failure to comply with precautions and exceeding the permissible dosage of the drug. In this case, speech impairment, dizziness, confusion, vomiting, stomach cramps, muscle tremors, and lacrimation are observed.
Poisoning occurs when inhaling harmful fumes, as well as in the case of prolonged contact of the insecticide with the skin, which leads to disruption of neuromuscular connections.
If alarming symptoms appear, you should immediately leave the room, take activated carbon at the rate of 1 tablet per 10 kg of body weight, wash it down with plenty of water. If your health worsens further, you should seek medical help.
To avoid negative health effects, only one person should be in the room during processing. He must carry out all manipulations with the drug in special clothing, a respirator and rubber gloves. Avoid contact of the working solution with exposed areas and mucous membranes. If this happens, you need to rinse off the product under running water.
After disinfestation, you should thoroughly wash your hands with soap, take a shower and wash your overalls.
Properties of matter
In its pure form, cypermethrin is a colorless transparent liquid. The smell is very weak. There are 8 types of isomers in the technical preparation. One part acts on flying insects, the other on crawling ones. Based on this, various isomers are used in various drugs. Depends on the purpose and types of parasitic insects.
Thus, alpha cypermethrin includes only cis-isomers of cypermethrin. Theta cypermethrin is exclusively trans isomers. Zeta-Cypermethrin - both. In addition, the composition of the final product can be enriched with other effective substances.
In general, Cypermethrin against bedbugs is resistant to ultraviolet rays and acidic environments. Loses properties under the influence of alkali.
How does cypermethrin act on bedbugs?
The substance begins to act after direct contact with the insect. The particles penetrate the chitinous shell and damage the nerve endings. The result is paralysis, and after some time, death.
How fast this will be depends on the concentration of cypermethrin. Typically, death occurs within 48 hours of exposure. In addition, the dirty insect rushes to its lair and infects the rest of the inhabitants. A chain reaction ensues. It acts on larvae and adult bedbugs, the eggs remain unharmed. In addition, bedbugs do not develop immunity to this substance. The drug remains active for 1 month. Extremely dangerous for bedbugs during the first 2 days.
Bedbug repellent Cypermethrin - solution preparation
You will need 1 liter of water at room temperature. To kill bedbugs, a concentrate of 0.05% is sufficient. The solution is stirred evenly for 5 minutes. Fits in a spray bottle. Consumption rate 50 ml per 1 sq. m does not depend on the type of surface being treated. Must be used within 8 hours after preparation.
Disinfection
A man from a bedbug extermination company
The habitats and movements of bedbugs are being treated. Particular attention is paid to baseboards, window sills, doorways, cracks, peeling wallpaper and laminate flooring, carpets and wall paintings. Repeated treatment is carried out after 10-14 days.
Precautionary measures
• Make sure there is no one else in the house except you. Don't forget about animals and small children. • If you have an aquarium, take it to another room or cover it with a blanket. • Wear a suit that you won't mind throwing away later. • You will need goggles, a respirator and gloves. Manufacturers claim that it does not cause allergies if it comes into contact with the skin, but anything can happen. • Start treating the room. • Keep the sprayer at arm's length. • First treat the areas where bedbugs have been found. Then move on to everything else. • After completing the procedure, open the windows for ventilation. • Remove suit and protective equipment. Wash your hands with soap and wash your face. • Rinse your mouth with baking soda solution. • Leave the room for 1.5-2 hours. • Upon arrival, do a wet cleaning in those places where the residents' hands touch. Wipe door handles, backs of chairs, sofas, tables, etc. • Only after this can you enter the house. • You are advised to take a shower.
How much does the drug cost?
