When to use
Parasitic infestations are common among domestic dogs and cats. Among the parasitic pathogens, three groups can be distinguished:
- blood-sucking insects - fleas, lice, lice;
- micromites that parasitize the outer layer of skin, hair follicles and adjacent glandular ducts;
- Ixodid ticks, which attach to the skin of an animal for feeding.
Ectoparasites can get on the skin/fur:
- while walking or swimming in natural bodies of water (during the warm season);
- upon contact with a sick animal or contaminated care items;
- with street dirt or dust carried on the owner’s clothes/shoes - the pet does not have to leave the house to become infected;
- when visiting exhibitions or other places where animals are in groups.
This shampoo destroys existing parasites in your pet and reduces the risk of diseases that they carry.
Yuri Lizvinsky Veterinarian, head of the training department of Apicenna LLC
Insects and scabies mites can be parasites all year round; ixodid mites are active from March to the end of October (depending on the climate).
Symptoms of uncomplicated infestations by insects and micromites can be observed starting from the 15th day after infection, including:
- constant itching, causing sores and scratching;
- areas of flaky and rough skin;
- hard and brittle wool, the appearance of plaque;
- loss of appetite;
- nervousness, sleep disturbance;
- allergic skin reactions (dermatitis) with red or white “nodules” and scabs;
- change in coat in the form of “naked” or “shaved” areas.
You can detect the presence of insects at home by simply examining and/or combing the animal. The presence of micromites (acarosis) can only be diagnosed using a microscraping in a veterinary clinic.
Ignoring invasion can lead to complications, including:
- exhaustion:
- general poisoning of the body with frequent vomiting;
- jaundice and anemia;
- the addition of an infection with inflammation of the auditory/nasal passages, the mucous membrane of the eye, and in severe cases - with meningitis or blood poisoning.
Using shampoo allows you to:
- combine hygiene procedures with the destruction of existing parasites - this is important in warm weather or after visiting an exhibition/trip to the country;
- reduce the risk of diseases transmitted by ectoparasites - borreliosis, piroplasmosis, helminthiases.
Dana ultra-spray
1 ml of spray contains 5 mg of fipronil and 0.5 mg of cyfluthrin. The mechanism of the insectoacaricidal action of the aerosol is the same as that of drops. A
The spray for cats is produced in a volume of 95 ml, for dogs - 100 cm3.
The cost of a 100 ml bottle in January 2021 was 239 rubles.
Fipronil is a representative of insectoacaricides of the phenylpyrosol group, and cyfluthrin is a pyrethroid group. The drug protects pets from fleas, ticks and dipterous insects and mosquitoes immediately after treatment. Protection against flying parasites lasts for 5 days, ticks for a month, and fleas for a month and a half. An aerosol can is indispensable when the owner takes his pet with him when going outdoors. This spray protects animals from infection with Dirofilaria, which are carried by mosquitoes, and Pyroplasmas, which enter the bloodstream with the bite of an ixodid tick.
When spraying, it is necessary to protect the pet's eyes and mouth from the insecticide. The solution becomes safe when it dries, so for 20-30 minutes you need to put on a muzzle, Elizabethan collar or tie the jaws with braid.
The following aerosol insecticides have a similar effect:
- Aerosol Bolfo;
- BlochNet;
- Delix;
- Frontline.
Side effects, contraindications, storage rules are the same as for Dan drops.

Dana ultra
Active substances - fipronil, 10%; thiomethoxam, 5%, pyriproxyfen, 5%. The drug is an oily solution. The liquid is poured into metal-plastic pipettes for cats, 0.32; 0.64 ml, for dogs 0.4; 0.8; 1.6; 3.2 cm3. The composition of the components of Dana Ultra drops intended for cats and dogs are the same.
The mechanism of action of fipronil is to block nerve impulses. The pesticide paralyzes the arthropod and it dies. The inclusion of thiomethoxam and pyriproxyfen expands the spectrum of insectoacaricidal action.
After contact with the skin, the active components are not absorbed into the systemic bloodstream, accumulate in the sebaceous glands, hair follicles, and are distributed throughout the hairs. The protective effect begins 12-24 hours after application of the drug and lasts more than a month.
The cost of a 0.64 ml pipette in January 2021 was 148 rubles.
Drops are prescribed to dogs and cats older than 10 weeks. They are applied to whole dry skin in areas of the body that are inaccessible for licking - in the withers, spine and behind the skull. For animals weighing more than 20 kg, the insecticide is applied to 3-4 places. To combat ectoparasites, the drug is dosed to pets of different sizes in accordance with the scheme:

If an ixodid tick is detected, 1 drop is applied to it. If the arthropod does not fall off, it is removed using a special device.
Before and after treatment, the animal is not allowed to swim for two days. The components of the drug have photosensitizing properties. Therefore, after treatment, the animal is protected from sunlight for a day.
Side effects, contraindications, analogues, storage rules are the same as when using Dana spot drops.
Pharmacological action and therapeutic effectiveness
During hygienic treatment, the active substance quickly spreads over the skin and coat. Permethrin has a high rate of manifestation of therapeutic results - it begins to act almost instantly and destroys arthropods within 24 hours.
Absorption into the systemic circulation is no more than 2% - taking into account the concentration in shampoo, this factor is not clinically significant.
Permethrin is a synthetic insecticide and acaricide of the pyrethroid class. The drug is active against arthropods (insects and mites). Permethrin has proven to be highly effective in the fight against fleas, lice and lice - the component is included in many anti-pediculosis products. The effect of the drug on pruritic scabies (demodectic mange, sarcoptic mange) is somewhat weaker.
As part of the shampoo, the compound “works” by contact - the parasites die when they come into contact with the treated skin and fur.
Permethrin disrupts the permeability of cell membranes to sodium ions, inhibiting the process of repolarization of nerve cells. The channels remain open for a long time, excitation of the nervous system occurs and paralysis of the parasite occurs.
When used in recommended doses, a permethrin-based drug:
- does not irritate the skin;
- has no systemic toxic effect due to minimal absorption.
The solution has a slight irritant effect on mucous membranes.
Dana Spot-on
The active substance is fipronil. The drug is a 5% solution of acaricide in organic eluents. The liquid is poured into metal-plastic pipettes of 0.5; 1.0; 1.5 cm3 or bottles with a dropper of 15 ml. Dan drops for cats and dogs do not differ in composition.
The mechanism of action is to block nerve impulses. The pesticide paralyzes the arthropod and it dies. After contact with the skin, fipronil is not absorbed into the systemic bloodstream, accumulates in the sebaceous glands, hair follicles, and is distributed throughout the hairs. The insectoacaricidal effect begins 24 hours after application of the drug and lasts 1-1.5 months.
The cost of packaging in January 2021 was 150 rubles.
Application
Drops are prescribed to dogs and cats older than 12 weeks. They are applied to intact, dry skin in areas of the body that are inaccessible for licking - behind the skull, in the withers area. To combat ectoparasites, the drug is dosed to dogs and cats of different sizes in accordance with the scheme:
Weight, kg | Requirement, ml | Pipette volume, ml | Number of pipettes |

If an ixodid tick is detected, 1 drop is applied to it. If the arthropod does not fall off, it is removed using a special device.
For otodectosis, 3-5 drops of Dan are added to the ear canal, cleared of crusts. If only one ear is affected, drops are also applied to the second. The treatment is repeated at intervals of 5-7 days. For demodicosis, notoedrosis or sarcoptic mange, areas of the body that have been previously cleared of crusts are treated, covering 1-1.5 cm of clinically healthy skin. The amount of the drug used should not exceed the doses indicated in the regimen. In case of large-scale lesions, in order to avoid poisoning by parasite decomposition products, half the body is treated. A day later, the remaining areas are sanitized.

To prevent the animal from licking the pesticide and becoming poisoned, a muzzle, an Elizabethan collar, or the jaws are closed with braid are put on it for half an hour. The dried surface is not dangerous for the pet. Before and after treatment, the animal is not allowed to swim for two days. To prevent parasites that survive or hatch from eggs from reaching a sexually mature state, treatments are repeated weekly until recovery.
Side effects, contraindications, analogues, storage conditions
In case of poisoning, vomiting, muscle tremors, and profuse salivation develop. The animal is given injectable detoxifiers. In case of an allergic response, wash off the drops with water and seek veterinary help. For pregnant and lactating females, the drug is used in emergency situations under the supervision of a qualified specialist. Insectoacaricide is not prescribed to puppies and kittens up to 12 weeks, dogs less than 2 weeks, cats - 1 kg.
The veterinary drug market offers a wide selection of insectoacaricidal drops:
- Leopard;
- Advocate;
- Advantage;
- Bolfo;
- Delix;
- Frontline.
Insectoacaricidal drops are stored in the manufacturer's packaging for 2 years from the date of manufacture at temperatures ranging from up to 25° C.
Application procedure
The main nuance of using medicinal shampoo is the selection of dosage. The required volume for one procedure is calculated based on the ratio: 0.5–1 ml per 1 kg of pet weight.
Therapeutic and hygienic manipulations are carried out in accordance with the following algorithm:
- The animal's skin and fur are moistened with warm water until wet (not damp).
- Apply shampoo in the required dosage, gently rubbing into the skin and coat to create foam. It is necessary to avoid getting the solution into the eyes or mucous membranes (applies to both the owner and the pet).
- Wait 5–7 minutes, during which time the pet should be restrained and/or closely observed, not allowing him to lick the product or shake it off.
- The shampoo is washed off with plenty of water.
- Then the wool is carefully combed out with a comb and dried thoroughly.
If there are indications or live parasites are detected during combing, the treatment can be repeated, but not earlier than after 3-4 weeks.
Therapy for parasitic infestations should include replacement or sanitization of beds/houses. Bedding or beds can be washed by adding 1-2 caps of shampoo. This will remove adult parasites and eggs.
It is also allowed to act like this:
- dilute the shampoo with water in a ratio of 1:2, taking into account the fact that for each square. m. of surface no more than 10 ml of product should be used;
- carry out wet treatment of the animal’s habitat;
- for 3 days do not allow the pet to come into contact with treated objects;
- Wash the bedding with regular detergent.
The drug is not intended for long-term protection against insects/mites. For this purpose, products in the form of drops on the withers or a collar are suitable - they can be used two days after bathing with shampoo.
Mode of application
Dana Ultra drops and spray are applied to the cat’s dry skin in places where she cannot lick off the medicine: on the withers and along the back. A single dose of Dana Ultra drops for cats is indicated in the instructions; it depends on the weight of the animal. The duration of action of the drug is from 4 to 8 weeks.
To treat acariasis (a disease caused by Otodectos cynotis mites), a few drops of Dana Ultra are placed in each ear of the cat, then the auricle is wrapped and massaged to better distribute the medicine.
Contraindications to the use of Dana Ultra are the presence of an acute infection in a cat, the period of rehabilitation after a serious illness, the period of pregnancy and feeding kittens, as well as individual intolerance to the components of the drug, which usually manifests itself in the form of an allergic reaction. Do not apply the product to damaged areas of the skin or use it simultaneously with other insectoacaricides.
In order to prevent infestation (infection) of cats with ectoparasites, it is recommended to periodically, once a month, treat the animal’s bedding or rug with Dana Ultra spray, this is especially important if the cat has free access to the street.
How to use Dana Ultra preparations:
Side effects
If safety rules are followed and dosages are observed, no negative manifestations are observed. No peculiarities associated with the initial use of the product or the cessation of regular treatments were found.
The occurrence of skin sensitivity reactions (increased itching, redness) is unlikely. If such symptoms worsen after washing off the product, it is advisable to contact a veterinary clinic to prescribe antihistamines.
There is no information on the development of severe intolerance reactions.
However, if during use the animal’s condition sharply worsens or acute/atypical signs appear, you should immediately consult a doctor.
Shelf life, precautions
The shampoo can be stored and used for 24 months from the date of production, observing the following requirements:
