Use of the drug Advantage for cats

Advantage as a veterinary drug

Advantage is an insecticide produced by the German pharmaceutical company Bayer. This product is widely used in domestic veterinary medicine.

Advantage is produced in the form of external drops, which are a transparent solution of a yellowish or light brown color. On the shelves of veterinary pharmacies, online stores and pet stores, this product can be found in pipettes in the following dosage:

  • for kittens and cats weighing up to 4 kg (0.4 ml);
  • for cats more than 4 (0.8 ml).

One cardboard package contains a blister with four pipettes and instructions for using the drops. The average cost of the drug is 820 rubles per package. A prescription from a veterinarian is not required to purchase the drops.

Advantage is an over-the-counter veterinary drug

The active component of this antiparasitic agent is imidacloprid. 1 ml of the drug contains 100 mg of active substance.

Auxiliary components:

  • benzyl alcohol;
  • propylene carbonate;
  • butylated hydroxytoluene.

How does the insecticide work?

Drops of Advantage, when they come into contact with the pet’s skin, are gradually distributed over the entire surface of the animal’s body. The maximum effect is achieved after 12 hours.

The active substance of the drug blocks the receptors of the parasite's nervous system, which ends in paralysis and further death of the insect.

In terms of the degree of impact on the cat’s body, Advantage is classified as a low-hazard drug (according to GOST, class 4).

Information about the drug

Advantage drops for cats are produced by the famous German company Bayer HealthCare AG. These drops have managed to prove themselves in the domestic market, and are also loved by pet owners and veterinarians. The antiparasitic agent copes well with blood-sucking pests and gives a visible effect almost instantly. To understand what determines the success of the drop, it is worth considering the composition of the substance.

In this video, the author talks about killing fleas on animals:

The manufacturer has provided for some aspects. If the animal manages to lick the drops, it will immediately feel the bitter taste, which will cause active salivation. Owners do not need to worry: this is not intoxication, but a normal reaction of the body that will stop after some time.

In what cases can drops be used?

This insecticide is used to destroy:

  • lice;
  • fleas;
  • lice eaters.

Advantage can be taken for both therapeutic and preventive purposes.

If a cat is constantly itching, then this is one of the signs of entomanosis.

Advantage can only be used in combination with other drugs in the treatment of flea dermatitis. Using it as an independent means in this case is inappropriate.

Contraindications for use and possible negative reactions

There are certain restrictions on the use of drops:

  • hypersensitivity to the components of the veterinary drug;
  • kittens are up to ten weeks old.

This antiparasitic drug should be used with extreme caution when treating pregnant and lactating females . The ideal option is when Advantage is used under the supervision of a veterinarian.

Cases of adverse reactions after using the drug are quite rare. Most often they arise as a result of individual intolerance to the components, overdose or due to non-compliance with the rules of use.

Adverse reactions:

  • itching and redness of the skin;
  • increased salivation when the pet accidentally licks the drug.

These ailments go away on their own and do not require drug treatment.

General recommendations for the use of drops

To minimize the risk of developing negative reactions, as well as to get the maximum benefit from using an insecticide, you need to follow some recommendations.

  1. Drip the solution into the withers area so that the cat does not have the opportunity to lick the medicine.
  2. Make sure the withers area is clean, dry and undamaged.
  3. Remove the cap from the pipette and pierce the protective film of the spout with the back of it.
  4. Use two fingers to spread the fur in the area where the product is applied.
  5. One pipette - one dose. If the cat weighs more than eight kilograms, then several pipettes are used. So, for a cat weighing 10 kg you will need one pipette with a dosage of 0.4 ml and one with a dosage of 0.8 ml. The drug is calculated according to the scheme 1 ml/kg.
  6. During the day you cannot pet, pick up or bathe your pet.
  7. You can wash your pet at least every 2 days.
  8. Repeated treatment with the drug can be carried out after 28 days.

Do not use drugs that have expired. It is also prohibited to use empty medicine pipettes for household purposes. They must be disposed of in waste containers.

Personal precautions

When treating your pet, it is important to follow personal hygiene and safety rules for working with chemicals.

When treating a cat, it is forbidden to eat or drink drinks. After work, you must wash your hands thoroughly using laundry soap and warm water. For 24 hours after treatment, it is recommended to isolate the animal from children. If the drug comes into contact with open mucous membranes of the nose or eyes, they must be rinsed with plenty of water.

Note! After treating the animal for fleas is completed, it is necessary to dispose of the empty container and wash your hands thoroughly under running water and soap.

If a person accidentally swallows a medicine, it is necessary to take enterosorbent (white activated carbon, Polysorb, Smecta) and seek help from your doctor.

Insecticide analogues

The German company Bayer produces two more insecticidal products for cats with the same active ingredient as Advantage - Advocate drops and Foresto collar. These drugs contain two active components, one of which is imidacloprid. These antiparasitic drugs can be classified as incomplete structural analogues of Advantage drops.

In addition to structural analogues, the modern veterinary drug market is ready to offer the consumer a whole line of antiparasitic drugs that have the same properties as Advantage, but differ from it in their active and auxiliary composition.

Functional analogues of Advantage:

  • Stronghold;
  • Leopard;

We picked up our first pet on the street. At home, we noticed that fleas were scurrying around our kitten’s fur, and the ears were simply black (at that time we decided that it was ordinary dirt, and not ear scabies). Therefore, one of our first purchases was a Bars flea collar, which attracted us with its relatively low cost. But as it turned out, this purchase was a waste of money. There are no fewer parasites. After consulting with a veterinarian, we purchased Stronghold drops from a veterinary pharmacy. I didn’t notice how the fleas disappeared and where they spilled out. But they almost completely disappeared on the second day. True, while washing the pet, I had to pull out dead parasites from the fur. After a few days, the ears also cleared up, although it was necessary to periodically clean them with cotton swabs. We used this antiparasitic agent only once. Once a week, in order to prevent the development of entomosis, we wash our pet with budget anti-flea shampoo. If there is a need to take your cat with you to a village full of barn cats, we put on a Foresto collar, which has never failed.

Description of the drug

This drug is unique in its kind, because its active substances act almost instantly, which means they can quickly and painlessly relieve your pet of finicky parasites and discomfort.

Active substances

This medication for pets includes the active ingredient imidocloprid - this component of the drug almost immediately relieves cats from irritation and a kind of torment.

For greater clarity, it is worth announcing the features of the effect of this substance on the skin of the animal and on parasites directly:

  • The drug is a small bottle with a dispenser. A couple of drops are enough to kill bloodsuckers, since the main function of the medicine is to have a nerve-paralytic effect on ticks or fleas (immobilization, and then complete destruction);
  • Complete destruction, that is, death of the insect occurs no later than 12 hours after using the drug;

Advantages

If we compare Advantage with other similar drugs, we can note several advantages that it has compared to other drugs:

  • When purchasing Advantage, you should carefully read the insert so as not to make mistakes due to your ignorance. So, in order to rid an animal of parasites, it is enough to apply the medicine once, the effect of which will end no earlier than in a month (4 weeks);
  • Saving is another important fact, because Advantage for cats is several times cheaper than Advantage for dogs, because the cost of the drug depends on the weight of the pet. So, the lower the weight of the cat/cat, the lower the price;

Contraindications

Like every medication, Advantage, if handled incorrectly, carries, if not serious, danger.

Therefore, it would be useful to announce the precautions that should be observed while using the drug:

  • Do not use the product on animals whose age has not reached 10 months;
  • Do not use drops on pregnant cats;
  • Avoid getting drops into the mucous membranes (if drops get into the mouth or a person swallows them, it is necessary to take activated charcoal);
  • Due to ignorance of the composition of the medication, a person may experience an allergic reaction while using it (consult a doctor immediately);

Good to know! In this context, it would be foolish not to mention that cats, after applying drops to their skin, may experience itching and redness in some areas of the skin - this is not scary, such side effects are provided for (itching and redness will go away in less than three days) .
